Joanna Wietrzy, an Australian athlete and current World No.1 in women’s singles Hyrox, has publicly addressed an incident that occurred during a recent competition in Beijing. The athlete participated in the Women’s Pro division at the event, which took place over the weekend. However, Wietrzy experienced a significant personal setback when she reportedly soiled herself while competing. The incident raised eyebrows, particularly given that she continued the race despite the circumstances.

Viral footage of Wietrzy during the event showed her with faecal matter on her arms and legs as she completed her race. This led to considerable outrage among viewers and sparked conversations regarding the ethics of allowing the race to continue under such conditions. Many questioned the decision of the event organisers to permit her to compete without intervening.

Wietrzy Issues Public Apology

On September 15, 2026, Joanna Wietrzy posted a four-paragraph statement on Instagram in which she expressed her sincere apologies to the people of China, her fellow competitors, and the organisers of the HYROX event. Wietrzy elaborated that she felt entirely fit at the beginning of the race, and she did not foresee any health issues. However, in hindsight, she acknowledged her regret for not stepping off the track during the incident.

In her statement, she stated, “I recognise that I should have made a different choice. I take responsibility for my decision to continue and am deeply sorry for the discomfort and disruption it caused.” Wietrzy further noted her intent to withdraw retroactively from the race, forfeiting the points she earned. She conveyed gratitude to those who supported her personally and as an athlete through this challenging time, emphasising the importance of self-care moving forward.

Wietrzy committed to learning from this experience, stating, “There is more to life than racing and knowing when it is right to step away.” She indicated the need for reflection and recovery in her personal life away from the public eye.

Response from HYROX Organisers

The controversy surrounding the incident prompted a swift reaction from HYROX organisers. They condemned online threats made towards athletes in light of the situation, announcing that those responsible would be permanently banned from future events. Mo Furste, a co-founder of HYROX, later issued an apology, acknowledging that the organisation should have intervened immediately during the race.

In response to the incident, the HYROX team revealed that new rules and procedures have been introduced to ensure that similar situations do not arise in future competitions. These measures aim to enhance the athletes’ safety and uphold the integrity of the sport. The organisation, which started in Germany in 2017, has rapidly grown into a popular global fitness event, attracting participants who seek a unique challenge that tests both strength and endurance.

With thousands competing across closed indoor circuits worldwide, each HYROX event utilises a standardised format that allows athletes to benchmark their performance against a global leaderboard, further underscoring the importance of maintaining the sport’s professional standards.
