Authorities in Nashik district, Maharashtra, have initiated legal proceedings against a member of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and his associates following a protest that took place within a municipal office. The activists allegedly entered the chamber of Dheeraj Bhamre, the Chief Officer of the Niphad Nagar Panchayat, and released two puppies from sacks onto his desk. The dramatic scene was captured on video and subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms.

Nature of the Charges Filed

According to officials from the Niphad police station, a case has been filed against Vikram Randhave and several others for hindering a public servant in the performance of their duties. In addition, charges related to animal cruelty have also been brought to light, primarily due to the manner in which the puppies were transported. Randhave, associated with the district youth wing of the party, led his fellow Yuva Sena (UBT) activists in the demonstration that has raised significant public attention.

During the protest, Randhave explicitly informed Bhamre that attempts to draw attention to the stray dog issue had been ongoing for six months without a response. The official attempted to reassure the protesters by stating that the civic authorities had already issued tenders addressing the situation, but this failed to pacify Randhave. He warned of further protests, stating, “If you fail to act, we will bring more dogs to your office next time, along with children and women affected by the problem.”

In a symbolic gesture of protest, Randhave placed a garland made of currency notes on the official’s desk, expressing frustration at what he perceived to be inadequate action from the civic body. He claimed that there were over 400 stray dogs within the limits of the Nagar Panchayat, with a troubling statistic revealing that more than 100 dog bites occurred monthly, posing a risk, particularly during the Ganesh festival.

Response from Shiv Sena Leadership

The incident has drawn attention from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, who expressed his discontent regarding the treatment of the puppies during the protest. In a statement posted on X, Thackeray acknowledged the concerns regarding the high number of dog bites in the city, totalling over 470 in the past five months, and the inaction of the civic authorities in addressing this issue.

Thackeray articulated that while concerns about civic negligence were warranted, the manner in which the puppies were handled was unacceptable. He communicated that he had counselled Randhave to apologise and refrain from similar actions in the future. Following this dialogue, Randhave reportedly issued an apology for the handling of the puppies during the demonstration.

Despite the severe allegations, the police have not yet made any arrests related to the incident. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between local residents advocating for animal control and the authorities responsible for addressing community safety and welfare issues.
