Bengaluru Woman Sexually Harassed in Broad Daylight, One Arrested, Others on the Run

In a troubling incident that unfolded in broad daylight on Sunday, a young woman in Bengaluru was allegedly harassed and physically assaulted by a group of intoxicated men while she was out to buy groceries. The assault occurred near Renuka Yellamma Layout in Anekal taluk, about 30–40 km from the city center.

The survivor recounted that she encountered four to five men who appeared to be drunk and under the influence of drugs. As she walked past, they reportedly began making vulgar remarks, attempted to grope her, and then surrounded her. “They were drunk, had smoked ganja, and came to harm me,” she said. “When I resisted, they hit me. I hit one of them back with my leg in defence.” She added that she had only been living in the area for a week and did not know the men personally.

Local residents intervened and managed to rescue the woman from the situation. However, the attackers allegedly returned to the locality later that day, creating further chaos and attacking the same people who had come to her aid. The woman also stated that the perpetrators followed her to her house gate and continued to threaten her.

Victim Files a Police Complaint

She filed a police complaint that evening, though she noted that no immediate arrests were made. “The boy who hit me is in the hospital now. He got injured hitting the gate and has filed a case on us,” she said. Following the incident, the woman informed her gym trainer, who later confronted the accused and allegedly assaulted one of them. That man is now hospitalised and has filed a counter-complaint.

The entire episode was recorded on CCTV, which has become key evidence in the ongoing investigation. Bengaluru Rural SP CK Baba confirmed that cases have been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and that both the woman’s and the accused’s complaints are being examined. “The primary accused has been arrested. Two to three others seen on CCTV are yet to be secured but will be picked up shortly,” he stated.

This incident comes amid rising concern over street harassment in the city. A similar case occurred on April 3 in BTM Layout, where a man was caught on video sexually assaulting a woman during the early hours of the morning. That FIR was filed under Section 354B following public outrage.

As police continue their efforts to trace the remaining suspects in the Mailasandra case, residents and women’s safety activists have called for stricter enforcement and faster response times in handling such crimes.
