Three Bangladeshi cattle lifters killed in clash with villagers in Tripura

The CSR Journal Magazine

Three suspected Bangladeshi cattle lifters were killed in a violent clash with villagers near the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Khowai district on Wednesday, officials said. Two local residents were also injured in the incident.

According to police, the confrontation occurred near Bidyabil village under Champahowar police station, when two locals working in a nearby rubber plantation spotted three Bangladeshi men hiding close to the international border. Upon being confronted, the men allegedly attacked the villagers with sharp-edged weapons, injuring both.

The wounded villagers returned to their village and raised an alarm, prompting a group of residents to rush to the scene. A second clash broke out, during which the three suspected intruders were captured and allegedly hacked to death by the villagers.

Police and forensic teams later reached the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them to Khowai District Hospital for post-mortem. The injured villagers are currently undergoing treatment at Behelabari Government Hospital.

Senior police officers have since visited the area to assess the situation, which officials said is now under control.

In a separate operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police seized a consignment of clothing worth Rs 8 lakh from the Karamtila area of South Tripura district on Tuesday. The BSF also foiled multiple smuggling attempts, rescuing cattle and seizing contraband items valued at around Rs 5 lakh, intended for illegal transport into Bangladesh.

Tripura shares an 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, much of which is fenced. However, officials acknowledge that several stretches remain vulnerable to infiltration, cattle smuggling, and other cross-border crimes.
