Auto-Rickshaw Driver Arrested in Chandigarh Murder Case; Two-Day Police Remand Granted

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chandigarh Police have made a significant breakthrough in a murder investigation by apprehending a 26-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Vishal Mishra. The arrest was authorized by Kanwardeep Kaur, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Union Territory Chandigarh, and executed under the oversight of Charanjit Singh Virk, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of East Chandigarh. The police operation was carried out by the team from the Police Station Industrial Area, led by Inspector Satnam Singh.

Details of the Case

The murder case is linked to an FIR filed on January 29, 2026, under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint was lodged by Prem Parkash Tiwari, a resident of Village Dariya, Chandigarh. Tiwari stated that his younger brother Arun Kumar, aged 31, also an auto-rickshaw driver stationed at the Railway Station, was involved in a dispute with Mishra on January 28 at around 8 PM. Tiwari intervened to calm the situation during their earlier altercation.

Sequence of Events

According to Tiwari, Arun had previously expressed concerns about Mishra, indicating that he had been threatened by him. On January 28, both men separately arrived at the GP Royal Hotel in Village Dariya, each with passengers. They reportedly ascended to the hotel’s top floor, where a renewed argument ensued. It was during this dispute that Vishal allegedly seized a knife from the hotel kitchen and fatally attacked Arun Kumar.

Aftermath and Arrest

Arun Kumar was quickly transported to a local hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries en route. Following the investigation, police identified Vishal Mishra, son of Daya Shankar Mishra from Saini Vihar Phase 3, Baltana, located in SAS Nagar district of Punjab, as the accused. He was subsequently arrested and brought before a local court, which granted a two-day police remand for further interrogation.

Background of the Accused

Police records indicate that Mishra works as an auto-rickshaw driver and has prior involvement in a separate FIR, numbered 193/2024, registered at Police Station Sector 31, Chandigarh, where he faced charges under different sections of the BNS. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Arun Kumar’s death is continuing as authorities gather more evidence.
