In the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Indian shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Niraj Kumar did not manage to clinch a medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position individual event on September 25. Aishwary achieved a fifth-place finish, scoring 327.6 points, while Niraj came in last, securing eighth place with a score of 299. This result was disappointing following India’s recent silver medal achievement in the team event.

Medal Allocations in the Event

The gold medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position individual event was awarded to Liu Yukun of China, who scored 360.5 points. Liu’s compatriot, Zhang Changhong, secured the silver with 360.2 points, while the bronze was earned by Islam Satpayev of Kazakhstan with a total score of 348.3 points. The performance of both Indian shooters did not meet the expectations after their earlier success in team competitions.

Prior Success in the Team Event

Prior to the individual events, Tomar, Kumar, and Rudrankksh Patil had collectively secured a silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position team event. They finished with a total of 1762-94x, just shy of the gold medalists China, who scored 1766-95x. South Korea took home the bronze medal with a score of 1751-87x. This achievement marked a notable improvement for India, who had previously lost their title in this event from the 2022 Asian Games.

Aishwary and Niraj’s Individual Standing

In the lead-up to the individual competition, Aishwary finished third in the individual standings with a score of 589-34x, while Niraj followed closely in fourth with a score of 588-34x. Both shooters qualified for the individual final due to their commendable preliminary performances. However, Rudrankksh Patil, who scored 585-26x, placed ninth and could not progress to the finals, reflecting a mixed day for the Indian shooting contingent.

Mixed Doubles Gold Medal Achievement

In a positive turn for the Indian contingent, the mixed doubles team of Suruchi and Kamaljeet claimed gold earlier in the competition. They finished the final round with a remarkable 484.6 points, defeating their South Korean opponents, who came second with 478.0 points. Iran took the bronze medal with a score of 415.8 points. The Indian pair not only secured gold but also set a new Asian record, surpassing the previous mark of 481.3 points set by Uzbekistan at the Asian Shooting Championships earlier this year in New Delhi.

Current Medal Tally for India

As of now, India has won 19 medals at the 2026 Asian Games. This tally includes two golds, eight silvers, and nine bronze medals. The recent successes contribute to India’s standing in the medal race, highlighting their solid performance in various sports. Earlier, the Indian women’s cricket team also added to the medal tally by winning gold after defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final match.
