Blanket Request Turns Deadly: Army Jawan Stabbed to Death on Moving Train After Heated Argument

The CSR Journal Magazine

What began as a simple train ride home for an Army jawan ended in a horrifying act of violence that has shocked the nation. On the night of November 2, Jigneshbhai (Jigar) Chaudhary, a 12-year Indian Army veteran from Banaskantha, Gujarat, was brutally stabbed to death by a railway coach attendant aboard the Jammu Tawi–Sabarmati Express. The deadly altercation allegedly began over a request for a blanket and bedsheet.

Chaudhary, posted in Udhampur (Jammu & Kashmir), had completed his duty and was travelling home on leave. He boarded the train from Firozpur Cantt in Punjab, looking forward to a quiet journey back to his family. But by midnight, a petty argument would escalate into a fatal confrontation.

The Dispute That Escalated Into Murder

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP) and eyewitness accounts, the soldier requested a blanket and bedsheet from the coach attendant, identified as Zubair (Juber) Memon, who was employed through a railway contractor. Memon reportedly refused, citing that Chaudhary was not entitled to the service as per the rules.

The verbal disagreement quickly turned heated. Passengers recalled hearing raised voices before Memon stormed off. A few hours later, after the train departed from Bikaner, Memon returned, this time armed with a knife. In a fit of rage, he stabbed the soldier multiple times, including a deep wound in the leg that severed an artery, leading to massive blood loss. Despite attempts to help him, Chaudhary died before medical aid could be reached.

Swift Arrest, Outrage Across the Country

As the train reached Bikaner, the GRP detained the accused and recovered the murder weapon. A case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder was filed. Memon has since been terminated from service, and investigations are underway to determine whether others were complicit.

The soldier’s body was taken to PBM Hospital, Bikaner for post-mortem and then transported to his native village, Moti Gidasan in Banaskantha, Gujarat. Thousands of villagers joined his funeral procession, waving the Tricolour and chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as they paid their last respects.

Jignesh’s brother, made an emotional plea for justice:

Jigneshbhai’s brother Jethabhai Chaudhary said, “My brother came home on leave and was killed by a deranged person on a train. We demand justice from the Prime Minister and Home Minister. Bring the accused to Gujarat and hang him.”

Relative Harjibhai Chaudhary voiced public concern, saying, “If an army man is not safe in an AC coach, what about ordinary passengers? We demand that everyone linked to this murder be caught immediately.”

NHRC Steps In, Railways Under Fire

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident after receiving a complaint from the Sahyadri Rights Forum, calling it a serious human rights violation. The Commission issued notices to the Railway Board Chairman and Director General of the RPF, demanding a detailed action-taken report within two weeks.

The NHRC has also sought information on Zubair Memon’s hiring, training, police verification, and the contractor responsible for his deployment. Railways have admitted that Memon was not a permanent employee and was recruited through outsourcing, raising further concerns about screening and accountability of contract staff.

Nation Demands Accountability

The shocking murder of a serving soldier on a moving train has triggered widespread anger and anxiety about passenger safety and railway staff discipline. Relatives and local leaders have demanded that the case be tried under fast-track proceedings, and that the Railways review its personnel hiring policies to prevent such tragedies.

Public sentiment is unforgiving, many argue that if a trained Army man isn’t safe in an AC coach, then the plight of ordinary passengers is far worse. The incident serves as a grim reminder that India’s railways, the nation’s lifeline, must urgently address security lapses and vetting loopholes that could endanger millions of travellers.
