Anticipatory Bail Granted to Rajeev Kumar in AI Summit Protest Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Patiala House Court has granted anticipatory bail to Rajeev Kumar in connection with the AI Summit Protest case. The decision came on March 28, following earlier interim protection from arrest. The protest, organized by members of the Indian Youth Congress, took place during the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam on February 20.

Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal issued the anticipatory bail order after considering arguments presented by the Delhi police and Kumar’s legal counsel. The court emphasized the need for the accused to cooperate fully with any ongoing investigations and mandated that the police give him seven days’ notice before any possible arrest.

Legal Representation and Recent Developments

Rajeev Kumar was represented in court by Advocate Amrish Ranjan Pandey, who argued that the allegations revolve around Kumar’s involvement in documenting the protest at the AI Impact Summit. Pandey highlighted Kumar’s willingness to assist in the investigation process.

Previously, the court had already granted bail to several other individuals associated with the case, including Udai Bhanu Chib, who serves as the president of the Indian Youth Congress. In another development, interim anticipatory bail was also granted to Vikas Chikara, the General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress, who is being characterized by the Delhi police as an alleged conspirator. A non-bailable warrant had been issued against Chikara prior to the grant of bail.

Protest Details and Arrests

The Indian Youth Congress organized protests at the Bharat Mandapam venue as a form of dissent against the India-US trade agreement. During the demonstration, activists displayed their messages by removing their shirts, which bore slogans condemning the Prime Minister as “Compromised PM.” Following the protest, seven leaders from the Youth Congress were apprehended by authorities, leading to the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the incident.

The grant of anticipatory bail to Rajeev Kumar and other members of the Indian Youth Congress reflects a developing legal landscape surrounding the protests and underscores the intricate balance between political expression and law enforcement in India.
