Amazon to Expand US Drone Delivery to Nearly 500 Cities by Year-End

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amazon is expanding its Prime Air service, aiming to offer drone delivery in nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of this year. This move represents a significant increase in the service’s reach, approximately six times its current coverage. The initiative was first proposed by Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos over a decade ago but has faced numerous challenges, including regulatory obstacles, technical issues, layoffs, and community concerns regarding noise and privacy.

Currently, Prime Air operates in 11 metropolitan areas in the US, with plans to add six additional locations shortly. Reports indicate that the drones have already completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries this year and are currently making thousands of deliveries each day.

The technology aims to enhance Amazon’s reputation for expedited shipping, which has already seen a transition from two-day to one-day and same-day delivery for Prime customers. Prime Air is designed to push this concept even further, offering rapid delivery options.

Delivery Mechanisms and Capacity

The majority of drone deliveries occur within about an hour of customer orders being placed, with some packages reportedly arriving within just a few minutes. Amazon’s drones can transport packages weighing up to 5 pounds and can travel within a 7.5-mile radius of their operational centres.

In addition to improving delivery speed, Amazon is developing a new system that uses a retractable tether for gently lowering packages instead of dropping them from height, which could facilitate the delivery of fragile items such as eggs and other perishables.

While there are questions about potential job losses due to this technological shift, Amazon’s report does not suggest an imminent replacement of human delivery drivers. Currently, drones are more suited for lightweight, small orders over short distances, while human drivers manage larger and more diverse shipments over greater distances.

Implications for Delivery Workers and Competition

Despite the automation, it is anticipated that human workers will still play a critical role in the delivery ecosystem. Drones may take over simpler last-mile deliveries, primarily for small packages dispatched to residences in close proximity to Amazon facilities, potentially altering the nature of the work performed by delivery employees without eliminating their roles.

Amazon is also facing competition in the drone delivery sector. Alphabet’s Wing has successfully completed over 1 million commercial deliveries and operates in 20 US markets, while Zipline has reportedly accomplished 2 million deliveries across multiple continents.

Nevertheless, Prime Air continues to encounter technical challenges. Incidents involving two Amazon drones colliding with a crane in Arizona last October and another drone damaging an internet cable in Texas have prompted investigations by US authorities. Additionally, a drone crash in England is under scrutiny.

Potential for Expansion in India

An expansion of drone delivery services to India could be on the horizon, though any rollout would likely be gradual. The implementation of drone deliveries would require adherence to India’s aviation regulations and local laws, alongside addressing challenges posed by crowded urban areas, dense populations, and privacy concerns.

India has conducted trials in drone-based deliveries for healthcare and e-commerce, suggesting familiarity with the technology. For instance, Flipkart participated in vaccine and medical supply delivery pilots in Telangana, while various companies have tested e-commerce deliveries. However, scaling up to a comprehensive consumer delivery model, akin to Amazon’s plans in the US, would necessitate extensive regulatory approval, effective airspace management, and broad public acceptance.
