Aman Sehrawat Secures Gold by Overcoming World Champion at Asian Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

Aman Sehrawat successfully captured the gold medal in the men’s 57kg wrestling final at the Asian Games in Japan’s Nagoya on Saturday, defeating North Korea’s world champion Chong Song Han with a score of 11-7. This victory marked a significant achievement for Aman, who previously settled for bronze at the last Asian Games held in Hangzhou in 2023. During the match, Aman initially faced challenges due to Han’s defensive tactics, which hindered his ability to launch effective attacks.

He had to manage his strategy carefully, particularly after being placed on the activity clock early in the bout. Once he found his rhythm, Aman executed a successful takedown, allowing him to establish a lead of 4-1, followed by another attack that further extended his advantage to 6-1. Despite Han receiving treatment for a knee issue, he returned to the match with renewed energy, briefly taking a 7-6 lead.

Aman’s Journey to the Final

Aman previously demonstrated his skills in the tournament by defeating Tajikistan’s Aiaal Belolyubskii 14-8 in the semifinals after opening his campaign with a dominant 20-9 victory over Japan’s Yamato Ogawa. He also bested Kazakhstan’s Nurdanat Aitanov in the quarterfinals, setting the stage for his final match against Han, which solidified his status as a top competitor.

This title enhances Aman’s accomplishments, which already include an Olympic bronze medal, an Asian Championships gold, and a U23 World Championships gold. His recent victory occurred a day after teammate Sujeet Kalkal won gold in the men’s 65kg category, showcasing India’s strength in wrestling at the Games.

Aman’s journey in wrestling began in the mud akhadas of Birohar, Haryana, marked by personal loss at a young age. After the passing of his mother at ten and his father a year later, he continued wrestling with the support of his uncles and coach Lalit Kumar, who has played a crucial role in developing his technique.

Training and Support Leading Up to the Olympics

Aman’s rise in the wrestling circuit includes several international accolades, such as securing a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning bronze at the World Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Istanbul. His preparation for the Olympics was rigorous, involving nearly eight hours of training daily as he geared up to compete.

Despite his impressive performance, Aman faced setbacks following the Olympics, dealing with injuries that affected his participation in various championships.  However, he persevered to achieve bronze at a ranking tournament in Mongolia and subsequently clinched gold at an international competition in Turkey. His athletic journey has benefitted from significant government support, including financial assistance for training camps abroad and for hiring experienced coaches.

The support amounts have totalled over Rs 1 crore since the start of his Olympic journey, showcasing the backing he has received to reach his goals. Following his recent accomplishments, Aman now aspires to transition from being an Olympic bronze medalist to winning gold in future competitions. His ambitions reflect his determination to not only honour the legacy of his idol, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, but also to carve out his own distinguished path in the sport.

The latest gold medal at the Asian Games is a critical achievement for Aman, and his dedication continues to shape his career as he aims for greater heights in wrestling. His successes in recent tournaments are seen as stepping stones towards realising his ultimate goal of earning Olympic gold.
