The Union Home Ministry has released an order mandating that all six stanzas of the national song “Vande Mataram” be sung at official functions and other occasions. This directive, issued on February 6, 2026, reinstates the last four stanzas of the song that had been previously excluded by the government of Jawaharlal Nehru, reportedly to uphold the song’s secular nature.
The latest order specifies the “official version” of the composition by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, which is to be performed over a duration of three minutes and ten seconds.
Occasions for Performance
According to the order, “Vande Mataram” is to be played during civil honorary ceremonies and official state functions, as well as at government-organized events attended by the President of India. The national song will be played both when the President arrives and departs from such functions. Furthermore, it is stipulated that the song will be aired before and after the President’s address to the nation on state media platforms, including Akashwani and Doordarshan.
Protocols for Audience Participation
As per the Ministry’s guidelines, all attendees must stand in attention when “Vande Mataram” is performed. However, this rule will not apply in cinema halls where the song is played as part of a film or news reel, as standing may disrupt viewing and disturb the peace. At the state level, similar protocols will apply for official events attended by the governor or lieutenant governor.
Preparatory Instructions
Before the rendition of the national song, a drumroll will precede the performance, possibly accompanied by instruments such as the “mridang” or trumpet. In formal settings, a seven-step marching drill will be conducted to signal the commencement of “Vande Mataram.”
Inclusion in Cultural Events
The Home Ministry also emphasized that “Vande Mataram” should be sung at all cultural events where the national flag is hoisted. This includes the arrival and departure of the President at both governmental and public gatherings outside formal state occasions. The instruction clarifies that all six stanzas must be included in such renditions.
Implementation in Schools and Informal Events
Additionally, the guidelines stipulate that morning school assemblies in all educational institutions must feature a group singing of “Vande Mataram.” Informal events attended by government ministers are also encouraged to include group renditions of the song, promoting its recognition as an integral part of national identity and heritage.
