Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, has strongly condemned the Central government for its proposal to introduce a time limit on responses in Parliament. He describes this move as “undemocratic” and an indication that the government intends to provide “empty statements” rather than substantive answers. Yadav’s comments follow Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement of a discussion scheduled in Parliament regarding student protests related to the NEET paper leak, set to commence at 3 PM.

In a social media post, Yadav stated, “The time limit that the government wants to set for responding in Parliament is undemocratic in itself. This won’t be a genuine response; it will merely be an empty statement.” He further alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks to evade its constitutional responsibilities, implying that it wishes to conclude the ongoing Monsoon Session prematurely.

Yadav asserted that the government’s actions reflect a desire to avoid accountability and responsibility. He indicated that fulfilling these obligations demands thorough consideration rather than a mere formality dictated by time constraints. He emphasised the seriousness of the issue, characterising it as an act of gross misconduct directed towards citizens.

Government’s Stance on Parliamentary Discussions

On the same day, Amit Shah stated that the government is prepared for an in-depth discussion on the issue of student protests caused by the NEET paper leak. He requested the Opposition to submit a letter to the Speaker by 2 PM to facilitate the discussion starting at 3 PM. Shah expressed confidence in addressing all aspects of the protests and reiterated his readiness to respond to queries from Parliament members.

During remarks made outside the Parliament complex, Shah explained his commitment to the parliamentary process. He noted, “Ever since the Parliament session began, I have been present in my chamber, actively participating. If the Opposition continues to disrupt proceedings in both houses, it raises questions about effective discourse. However, from 3 PM today until 3 PM tomorrow, I will be available in the House to listen to concerns and provide clear responses.” He further stated the government has no intention of concealing information and is committed to transparency.

Shah also conveyed that he is willing to suspend Question Hour, if permitted by the Speaker, to accommodate uninterrupted discussions regarding the student protests. His announcement positions the government as open to dialogue, aiming to clarify concerns regarding the protest issues to the public.
