Ahmedabad Hotel Prices Surge 400% Ahead of India–New Zealand T20 World Cup Final

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hotel room rates in Ahmedabad have seen an unprecedented rise as cricket enthusiasts from across the country and abroad flock to the city for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand. Room prices have escalated by as much as 300 to 400 percent, according to industry experts.

Narendra Somani, the president of the Hotels and Restaurants Association of Gujarat, confirmed that the surge in demand has led to a drastic increase in hotel tariffs. He indicated that prices for rooms that previously ranged from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 have now surged to between Rs 15,000 and Rs 50,000, reflecting the heightened demand surrounding the cricket match scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Luxury Hotels Experience Skyrocketing Tariffs

Online travel booking platforms have also echoed the rising rates at major hotels throughout the city. For instance, a Deluxe Room for two at the Taj Skyline on Sindhu Bhavan Road is currently priced at approximately Rs 2.01 lakh, along with an additional Rs 36,000 in GST for Sunday night. This represents a dramatic increase compared to the usual price of Rs 9,000 to Rs 15,000, marking a nearly twenty-fold rise.

Room rates at the Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels on Ashram Road are now listed at about Rs 20,950, which is considerably higher than the typical range of Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000. At the Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad, prices have escalated to around Rs 30,000 for the match night, nearly quadrupling the usual rates charged on regular days.

Occupancy Rates Anticipated to Remain High

Somani noted that Ahmedabad boasts approximately 10,000 hotel rooms distributed across various categories. Although the demand for accommodations has surged, he anticipates that the city will not be completely sold out. He projected an occupancy rate nearing 80 percent for hotels in and around Ahmedabad on the day of the match due to the influx of visitors.

With hotel prices soaring, many visitors are seeking alternative lodging arrangements rather than staying overnight in Ahmedabad. Somani mentioned that some fans are opting to stay in Gandhinagar, situated roughly 25 kilometers away from Ahmedabad, while others plan to commute for the match and return the same day.

Fans Opt for Alternative Travel Arrangements

Travel patterns have emerged among attendees, particularly those from Mumbai who prefer to make the journey via road. They typically arrive in Ahmedabad by late afternoon and head directly to the match, with plans to return home the same night. Fans from other regions of Gujarat are adopting similar approaches, often driving to the match and back in a single day.

In addition to domestic travelers, international visitors have also begun to arrive in Ahmedabad to witness the high-profile final. As excitement builds ahead of the match, the city prepares to welcome a diverse group of cricket fans for this prestigious event.
