Accused in Gauri Lankesh Murder Case Wins Jalna Civic Poll as Independent

The CSR Journal Magazine

A municipal election result from Jalna has sparked fresh national debate after Shrikant Pangarkar, who faces trial in the 2017 killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh, emerged victorious as an independent candidate. Pangarkar won Ward 13 of the Jalna Municipal Corporation by 2,621 votes, defeating nominees from the BJP and other parties.

The Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stayed out of the contest in this ward, leaving the field open for a fragmented contest among independents and rival political groups. Voting for the Jalna civic body took place on January 15.

Pangarkar’s Post-Win Celebrations Spark Fresh Political Debate

Shortly after the results were announced, Pangarkar was seen celebrating with supporters. The visuals quickly circulated, drawing sharp reactions and reigniting discussions around the eligibility and acceptability of individuals facing serious criminal charges contesting elections. Responding to the criticism, Pangarkar said there has been no conviction against him and stressed that the matter remains before the court.

The victory comes while proceedings in the Gauri Lankesh murder case are still ongoing. Pangarkar was granted bail by the Karnataka High Court on September 4, 2024.

Gauri Lankesh, known for her outspoken journalism and activism, was shot dead outside her Bengaluru home on September 5, 2017. The killing triggered widespread outrage across India and intensified conversations on dissent, freedom of expression, and political violence. Pangarkar was later named as an accused in the case.

Pangarkar’s Political Background

Pangarkar is no stranger to local politics. He served as a corporator in Jalna between 2001 and 2006 when the Shiv Sena was undivided. After being denied a ticket in 2011, he moved away from the party and later associated himself with the right-wing Hindu Janjagruti Samiti.

In August 2018, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested Pangarkar following the recovery of crude bombs and weapons from different parts of the state. He was charged under the Explosives Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections scheduled for November 2024, Pangarkar briefly joined the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. However, after public backlash, Shinde announced that Pangarkar’s induction into the party would be placed on hold.
