The CSR Journal Magazine

An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was reportedly shot and injured in Amritsar, Punjab, following a heated dispute over vehicle parking that escalated into an exchange of gunfire. The injured individual, Jaipal Singh Bau, serves as the AAP’s in-charge for Ward No 42 and has previously contested municipal elections under the party’s banner. He was transported to a private hospital for medical attention.

Another individual named Narendra Singh also sustained injuries during the incident. Initial reports suggest that the conflict originated from differing opinions on parking a vehicle and deteriorated rapidly, leading to gunfire between two factions. Following the shooting, chaos ensued in the Kot Atma Ram locality as nearby residents reacted to the sound of gunshots.

Response from Authorities

Local police arrived at the scene shortly after being notified and initiated an investigation into the incident. Officials are gathering information and analyzing the circumstances surrounding the firing. Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar, an AAP MLA representing a southern constituency, visited the hospital to assess the condition of Jaipal Singh and received updates from medical personnel about the status of the injured individuals.

Nijjar described Jaipal Singh as a senior member of the party and highlighted the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the reasons behind the violence. He emphasised that, as of now, there has been no confirmed indication of political rivalry being a factor in this incident.

Ward No 47 councillor Varpal Singh Babbar, who identified Jaipal Singh as a close associate, confirmed the account that the disagreement began over vehicle parking. He mentioned that Jaipal Singh was struck by a bullet, while multiple shots were reportedly fired during the confrontation. Babbar added that there were claims of an attempted assault on Jaipal Singh’s son amid the chaos.

Further Investigation and Statements

Baljinder Singh Aulakh, a police official from the B Division police station, provided insights on the incident, stating that the altercation occurred between two young individuals, Karan and Tajinder Singh, over a vehicle parking issue. The verbal dispute escalated quickly into a physical confrontation, which ultimately led to the firing. Aulakh confirmed that Jaipal Singh and Narendra Singh were both injured and are currently receiving treatment.

As part of the investigative process, police are recording statements from individuals involved in the incident and examining evidence from the scene. Some individuals allegedly claim that the gunfire was a reaction made in self-defence during the conflict. Aulakh stated that the police will determine the appropriate legal actions following the completion of their investigation.

The incident has raised concerns in the local community regarding safety and the escalating nature of disputes in public spaces. Local residents are reportedly anxious about the implications of such violence in their area, prompting calls for increased security measures and community engagement to prevent future altercations.
