Priest Dies Following Brain Bleed; Family Claims Police Assault Over Parking Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 55-year-old priest from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has died days after suffering a brain bleed, with his family alleging that police personnel assaulted him following a disagreement over parking. The deceased, identified as Paramasivam, reportedly had a confrontation with his neighbours, Muthiah and Malathi, on the evening of July 17 regarding parking a vehicle. This dispute led to both parties being registered as defendants in a police case on July 23, after which they were granted station bail.

Medical Condition and Hospitalisation

Paramasivam’s family claims that he was assaulted by police officers from the Chinthamani Police Station when he sought clarification about the incident. The day after this alleged police interaction, he began experiencing severe headaches and vomiting, prompting him to initially visit a nearby primary health centre for treatment.

On August 5, he was admitted to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, where he reportedly told medical staff that he had sustained his injuries from a fall at home. However, his family later contended that he provided this explanation under duress, fearing retribution from the police. Medical assessments ultimately revealed that he was experiencing bleeding in the brain, which prompted his transfer to a private hospital on August 11.

Sadly, Paramasivam succumbed to his injuries on August 15. The family members have expressed their belief that his death was directly linked to the alleged assault by police officials.

Family’s Response and Legal Action

In the wake of Paramasivam’s death, his family sought legal recourse by approaching the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. They have called for a thorough investigation and demanded accountability from several police officials, including Inspector Bhaskaran, Sub-Inspector Jayakumar, Head Constable Anand, and Constable Abdul Mohamed, who are accused of being involved in the alleged assault.

Madurai District 5th Magistrate Lakshmipriya conducted an on-site inspection of Paramasivam’s body at the mortuary of Rajaji Hospital. The magistrate also engaged with family members for their testimonies and oversaw the post-mortem examination, with the aim of uncovering the exact circumstances leading to the priest’s death.

During this period of grief, Paramasivam’s wife, Ayyammal, expressed her anguish at the mortuary, alleging that police misconduct resulted in her husband’s tragic fate. She further accused law enforcement personnel of providing a false account, asserting that he had died due to a fall at home.

Continuation of Investigations

The allegations regarding the involvement of police officials in Paramasivam’s injuries are currently under scrutiny. Authorities have yet to substantiate the claims made by the family. Investigations are ongoing, with the findings from the post-mortem examination anticipated to clarify the matter.

As this case unfolds, the community is watching closely, eager to understand the broader implications and the justice that might be served. The family’s quest for accountability highlights the importance of thorough investigations in cases involving alleged police misconduct.

Moving forward, it remains crucial for the legal system to ensure a fair and comprehensive examination of the events that led to Paramasivam’s death, thereby addressing the family’s concerns and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
