Aakash Chopra Picks Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jasprit Bumrah as Top Contenders for IPL 2026 Orange, Purple Caps

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has outlined his predictions for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, focusing on players likely to secure the Orange Cap and Purple Cap. The tournament is set to kick off with a much-anticipated opening match featuring the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), against the strong batting lineup of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra named an all-Indian lineup, with notable players vying for top honors.

Top Orange Cap Contenders Identified

For the Orange Cap, awarded to the leading run-scorer, Chopra has selected young openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill as his main contenders. Both players have previously won the Orange Cap, alongside the veteran batsman Virat Kohli, who has claimed the honor twice. Chopra suggested that if Delhi Capitals (DC) have a successful run in the tournament, KL Rahul might also emerge as a serious contender. He expressed strong optimism about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s potential performance this season, stating, “I believe this could be a breakout season for him.” He added that Shubman Gill is also highly motivated to prove himself.

Jaiswal’s Road to Team India

Chopra also discussed Jaiswal’s chances of returning to the Indian T20I and ODI squads, highlighting the need for the young player to score between 600 and 650 runs in the IPL. Jaiswal has achieved significant success in his T20 career, amassing 723 runs in 23 T20Is at an impressive average of 36.15 and a strike rate of 164.31, including one century and five fifties. In four ODIs, he has accumulated 171 runs, including a century.

Jaiswal’s Impressive IPL Record

In the IPL, Jaiswal has been a standout performer for Rajasthan Royals, accumulating 1,619 runs over the last three seasons with an impressive average and strike rate. His breakout season in 2023 positioned him as the fifth-highest run-scorer, where he registered 625 runs in 14 matches, averaging 48.07 and boasting a strike rate of over 163. Chopra expressed hope that a strong showing in IPL 2026 will solidify Jaiswal’s position in the national team.

Purple Cap Favorites Revealed

Turning to the Purple Cap, awarded to the leading wicket-taker, Chopra named Jasprit Bumrah from Mumbai Indians and Varun Chakravarthy from Kolkata Knight Riders as the primary candidates. He stated that Bumrah’s fitness will play a crucial role in his chances of securing this title, noting his past performance where he was the sixth-highest wicket-taker in the previous season. Bumrah took 18 wickets across 12 matches, while Chakravarthy secured 17 wickets at an average of 22.52.

Bumrah’s Fitness Matters

Chopra shared his observations on Bumrah’s recent training at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, indicating that while there are no injury concerns reported, his full participation in the tournament remains vital for his success. “If he remains fit and plays throughout the season, he could be in contention for the highest wicket-taker distinction,” Chopra remarked, emphasizing the importance of Bumrah’s health for Mumbai Indians’ campaign this season.
