PM Modi Inaugurates New Cattle Breeding Centre in Gujarat to Boost Milk Output

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre in Gujarat on Friday. This initiative aims to improve indigenous cattle breeds and significantly increase milk production across the region. The centre is located in Bhildi, within the Banaskantha district, and has been established by Banas Dairy.

With a focus on utilising advanced breeding techniques, the centre is designed to provide affordable breeding services to livestock farmers. During his visit, PM Modi toured the facility and engaged with officials to gain insights into its operations. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Shankar Chaudhary, the chairman of Banas Dairy, who also serves as the Speaker of the Gujarat Assembly.

Investment and Infrastructure of the Centre

The Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre spans an area of 127 acres and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 325 crore. The project has received technical guidance from the National Dairy Development Board, alongside support from the Centre’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission. This collaboration underlines the government’s commitment to enhancing the dairy sector in India.

According to an official statement, the facility will implement breeding methods such as in-vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer. These methods are expected to improve the quality of indigenous cattle breeds while also increasing overall milk production. The centre aims to produce approximately 25,000 high-quality embryos annually, contributing to the sustainability of dairy farming in the region.

Special emphasis will be placed on indigenous cow breeds, including Kankrej, Gir, Sahiwal, and Tharparkar. The centre will also focus on buffalo breeds such as Mehsani, Banni, Jaffrabadi, and Murrah. This diverse approach aims to enhance the genetic quality of livestock, thereby improving productivity and profitability for farmers.

Support for Dairy Farmers and Future Initiatives

The initiative is particularly timely, as rising cattle maintenance costs and declining fodder availability pose challenges for dairy farmers. The government has stated that the centre will provide high-quality semen, embryos, and breeding services at affordable rates. This support is intended to help farmers achieve higher milk yields with fewer animals, ensuring greater economic viability.

During his visit, PM Modi is also expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for five major development projects associated with Banas Dairy at Bhildi. These projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance the dairy sector in Gujarat and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.

The establishment of the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre marks a significant step towards modernising the dairy industry in India. By focusing on indigenous breeds and employing advanced breeding technologies, the centre aims to create a sustainable future for dairy farming in the region, benefiting both farmers and consumers alike.
