Deepinder Goyal’s Temple: Key Details Before Launch

The CSR Journal Magazine

Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato, is set to launch a novel health-tech wearable named Temple, designed to monitor blood flow to the brain. This device distinguishes itself from traditional wearables by focusing on cerebral health rather than merely tracking physical activity. Goyal first showcased Temple during an episode of Raj Shamani’s podcast, where the innovative concept garnered significant attention. Recently, badminton player PV Sindhu has been seen using it in competitions, further elevating its visibility.

Temple is described as a compact, pill-shaped device that fits between the forehead and the ear. This unique positioning allows it to gather crucial data via its system known as BrainFlow, which tracks real-time blood flow, oxygenation levels, cognitive load, and entropy. Goyal asserts that Temple offers the first continuous, wearable measurement of cerebral blood flow, marking a significant advancement in personal health monitoring.

The significance of Temple lies in its potential to help individuals monitor an aspect of health that often goes unmeasured. Goyal highlights that the brain consumes approximately 20 per cent of the body’s blood supply, which is vital for regulating hormones, sleep, immunity, and overall health. As blood flow diminishes with age, he aims to empower people to maintain their well-being for longer periods, bridging a gap in current health technology.

User Experience and Design

Temple is securely held in place using disposable tapes known as Grips. Goyal has indicated that developing an effective Grip was as challenging as creating the device itself, and the final product is suitable for 99 per cent of users. The purchase includes an unlimited supply of Grips, ensuring that users can rely on the device during various activities, including exercise and water activities, although scuba diving is discouraged.

Comfort and usability have been emphasised in the design; Temple is thin enough to be worn under glasses and can be covered with skincare or makeup products, provided the skin is clean. Each Grip has an approximate lifespan of seven days, aligning with the device’s battery life, although regular changes every two to three days are recommended for optimal performance.

Goyal reassured users that the PPG sensor poses no harm to developing brains, though he suggests that individuals under 18 should only use the device in specific high-performance contexts, such as Olympic training.

Future Potential and Availability

Initially marketed towards athletes, Temple could evolve to provide insights into fatigue, recovery, focus, and sleep patterns. Goyal has broader aspirations for the device, suggesting that it could be useful for pilots assessing fitness to fly or aiding military personnel in mission readiness. Additionally, ongoing research aims to explore the possibility of converting thoughts into text, although Goyal cautioned that such advancements may take years to materialise.

Anticipation grows around the launch of Temple, with pre-orders for a limited edition expected to begin as early as next week, contingent on final preparations. Shipping is projected to commence before the close of 2026. Individuals on the early-access waitlist will receive priority, with applications still open on Temple’s official website.

As for pricing, while it remains undisclosed, estimates suggest it could be approximately Rs 72,000, with Goyal hinting at a cost near $1,000, equating to around Rs 1 lakh. The compact device is touted as the smallest wearable of its kind, available in six distinct colours: True Gold, Rose Gold, Black Mirror, Real Jade, Deep Blue, and Purple Funk.
