The avalanche that occurred at Himlung Himal, which stands at 7,126 metres, resulted in a tragic loss of life and left 12 individuals unaccounted for. This event unfolded on Sunday, when the avalanche struck the base camp, burying tents where 16 people, including mountain guides and support staff, were sheltering. As of now, four bodies have been discovered, with the search for the remaining 12 continuing under challenging circumstances.

Confusion Regarding Missing Individuals

In the immediate aftermath of the avalanche, there was considerable confusion regarding the number of individuals affected. Initially, eight people were reported missing by the Nepal Police. Furthermore, it was later reported that 22 people were unaccounted for, but rescuers managed to establish contact with 10 survivors shortly thereafter. By Tuesday, authorities had revised the figures, confirming that 12 individuals were still missing.

Sovbit Kunwar, the administrative officer at the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, stated, “Twelve people who were hit by the avalanche are still out of contact,” highlighting the ongoing uncertainty regarding their status. These individuals were primarily from Nepal and were engaged in various support roles for the climbing expedition.

Bad weather conditions at the site have significantly impacted rescue efforts, causing delays in operations aimed at locating the missing individuals. A dedicated 14-member rescue team was deployed to assist in the search, departing from Kathmandu on Sunday. They paused for a night in Chame before being transported to the Himlung base camp via helicopter on Monday morning.

Conditions Hampering Rescue Operations

The current weather conditions, marked by heavy snowfall, have severely hampered the rescue operations. This adverse weather has not only complicated the search efforts but has also raised concerns regarding potential additional hazards in the area, such as landslides and floods. Heavy snow has reportedly created a hazardous environment, preventing the rescue team from carrying out their tasks effectively.

Around two dozen high-altitude workers and guides from the organisations Himalayan Holidays and Imagine Nepal Trek and Expedition had previously travelled from Kathmandu to Himlung Himal approximately two weeks ago. Their initial objective was to prepare for the climbing season, which involved setting up the climbing route and readying the base camp. The avalanche struck while they were in the process of accomplishing these objectives amidst persistent rainfall and snowfall that had been affecting Nepal’s mountainous regions.

As the situation continues to develop, the authorities remain focused on the hope of locating the missing climbers. While the confirmation of four fatalities has added to the urgency and seriousness of the situation, rescue operations are still on hold due to the severe weather conditions. The community waits anxiously for any updates on the search efforts targeting the remaining individuals who have yet to be found.
