Keyaa Banerji Faces Challenges Post-Success in Powerlifting

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent success of Keyaa Banerji in powerlifting has brought her both recognition and unforeseen difficulties. At just 21 years old, Banerji captured the spotlight after executing an impressive 140kg deadlift in the Junior Women’s 47kg category during a competition held in Sun City, South Africa. This achievement, which surpassed three times her body weight of 45.70kg, secured her a silver medal and sparked significant interest in her athletic journey.

Alongside her outstanding deadlift, Banerji also posted commendable results with a 90kg squat and a 50kg bench press, accumulating a total of 280kg, which placed her fifth overall in her category. However, her newfound fame quickly became complicated by a range of challenges she had not anticipated.

Dealing with Privacy Violations

The intense media attention led to numerous consequences, including a troubling loss of privacy. Banerji encountered harassment online, impersonation of her accounts, and invasive discussions surrounding her ethnic background and caste. The situation escalated when a surge of AI-generated images of her emerged, altered without her permission, inundating her social media feeds and those of her friends and family.

Amidst these issues, Instagram suddenly suspended her original private account, which had a modest following of 300 and where she rarely shared images. In light of her circumstances, Banerji took the significant step of creating a new public profile as a means of reclaiming her narrative. She aimed to prevent further account suspensions while ensuring her voice remained intact in the public discourse.

“I was always a very private person and did my sport purely for a sense of personal fulfilment,” Banerji stated during an interview. “When I saw that clip of me going around after IPF Worlds, it initially made me uneasy because I had a private Instagram account. I wanted to share this achievement with my close friends and family.” Despite her discomfort in having to manage a public account, she expressed a desire to assert herself rather than be a passive recipient of others’ narratives.

Concentration on Athletic Goals

In her discussions, Banerji has emphasised her wish for the conversation surrounding her to remain focused on her athletic pursuits and the broader context of Indian powerlifting, rather than personal matters. “Now that I’m getting opportunities to speak on such platforms, I would like to keep the conversation related to my sport,” she explained, highlighting the importance of redirecting attention to her accomplishments as an athlete.

Banerji’s rising profile in the media serves as an essential platform to enhance the visibility of powerlifting within India’s sporting culture, a discipline that often remains underrepresented. Her international success has already marked her as one of the nation’s most promising young athletes, contributing to the sport’s recognition.

Beyond the competition floor, Banerji’s journey is marked by academic achievements as well. She has recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Ashoka University and is now considering pursuing further education with an MBA. However, her immediate focus remains on building upon her historic international experiences and being a leading figure in the world of powerlifting.
