Is Zakir Naik’s Visit a Sign of Rising Radicalisation in Bangladesh?

The CSR Journal Magazine

The propagator of radical Islam and open supporter of terror groups, Zakir Naik, would be visiting Bangladesh for a month, starting from November 28. Amidst the controversial visit, the biggest question is, why is Bangladesh welcoming Zakir Naik after nine years of the Dhaka attack. In 2016, after the Holey Artisan Bakery terror attack, the Bangladesh government then led by Sheikh Hasina had banned Zakir Naik’s Peace TV as one of the attackers had confessed that he was inspired by Naik’s rabid speeches.

Is Bangladesh supporting radicalism?

Welcoming Zakir Naik clearly shows that the current Muhammad Yunus government in Bangladesh is showing signs that his country is turning radical after Sheikh Hasina’s exit. In this month-long visit Naik will be traveling across Bangladesh and delivering speeches that are usually very provocative and anti-Indian. Zakir Naik is famous for his rabid speeches and he has been propagating radical Islam and openly supporting terror outfits. He is a wanted criminal in India and there are multiple cases against him for inciting communal disturbances.

The visit by Naik to Bangladesh would be his first, and it also comes within a year of Pakistan hosting him for a similar nationwide visit. In Pakistan, too, Naik was given a red-carpet welcome, and he met with the highest-ranking politicians and officials during the visit.

For a while now Indian agencies have highlighted the rise in radicalisation in the country, and this time the visit of Zakir Naik is like a confirmation of the doubt. It is said that the current Yunus government is nothing more than puppets of Jamaat-e-Islami, which has always encouraged the rise of radicalisation. Analysis of Naik’s trip clearly states that he would be travelling across Bangladesh and give his so-called peace talks that will highlight the necessity of violent Islam.

Will Zakir Naik replicate his Pakistan trip?

Like his 2024 Pakistan visit, where he met chiefs of terror outfits, he even met designated terrorists Muzammil Iqbal Hashmi, Muhammad Harris Dhar, and Faisal Nadeem, who are the top commanders of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, it is expected during the Bangladesh visit he will similarly meet the chief of terror outfits like HuJI and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Indian agencies have decreed that these two Bangladeshi terror outfits have close links with ISI and commanders of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad would be visiting Bangladesh to train members of HuJI and JMB.

Why did Zakir Naik flee from Dhaka?

Post the Dhaka attack that happened in 2016, Zakir Naik left the country, as he was named by one of the bombers, who clearly stated that he was inspired by Naik’s speech on YouTube. Zakir Naik is currently a resident of Malaysia and is banned and denied visas by Britain and Canada.

Zakir Naik, through his channel Peace TV, has been promoting violent interpretations of Islam. He has channels in two languages — Urdu and Bangla. The major controversy happened when Naik said, “If bin Laden is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him. If he is terrorising America, the biggest terrorist, I am with him. Every Muslim should be a terrorist.”
