5-Year-Old Falls from 22nd-Floor Balcony in Gurugram, Dies in Tragic Accident

The CSR Journal Magazine

A five-year-old boy lost his life on Saturday evening after falling from the balcony of his apartment on the 22nd floor at Pioneer Presidia in Sector 62, Gurugram. Police confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched into the incident.

Alone in Apartment Due to Auto-Lock

The child, Rudra Tej Singh, returned home after playing outdoors with the family’s domestic help around 5:30 pm. As he ran into the apartment ahead of the caretaker, the main door, fitted with an auto-lock system, shut behind him, trapping him inside. The caretaker was left unable to enter.

“The boy and the caretaker were returning from the park in the elevator. He rushed into the house and slammed the door shut. The digital lock could be opened only with the passcode, which only the parents knew,” said a police officer familiar with the case.

At the time, Rudra’s father, Prakash Chandra, a builder, and his mother, a doctor, were away at work. Police noted that the door was generally left open during the day, and the child was not expected to be alone.

Attempt to Call for Help Ends in Fall

Panicked and alone, the boy reportedly went to the balcony and climbed onto a clothes-drying bar, apparently trying to seek attention from neighbours. Unfortunately, he lost his balance and fell from the 22nd floor.

Residents immediately rushed Rudra to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police said the body was handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination on Sunday.

Short Time Frame

Authorities noted that the entire incident took place within 10–15 minutes. Despite the caretaker and neighbours calling out to him and alerting building security, no one was able to intervene in time.

No Suspicion of Foul Play

Police have ruled out any criminal involvement. Rudra’s father stated that he believes his son’s death was accidental. A senior officer described it as a “deeply unfortunate accident.”

SHO Ajay Bir Singh of Sector 65 police station said, “The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. We are investigating the matter.”

Society Plans Safety Review

The tragedy has raised concerns about child safety in high-rise apartments. The housing society has pledged to review balcony safety and access controls to prevent similar incidents in the future.
