The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman arriving in Ahmedabad from Kuala Lumpur was apprehended by customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold valued at Rs 83.29 lakh. The Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) detained her following specific intelligence inputs and thorough profiling. She was flagged while trying to pass through the green channel and, upon questioning, was unable to provide convincing explanations, leading to a more extensive search.

Discovery of Concealed Gold Capsules

During the examination, authorities discovered two oval-shaped capsules wrapped in black tape. These capsules, concealed inside her private parts, contained a liquid chemical paste combined with gold. The total weight of the material retrieved amounted to 643.28 grams. Upon conducting a purification process under expert supervision, a total of 553.07 grams of 24-carat gold with a purity of 999 was extracted from the substance.

Estimated Value and Tax Implications

The value of the confiscated gold is estimated at Rs 83,29,234, with an associated tax liability of Rs 75,58,393. Officials indicated that the woman attempted to avoid customs duty by not declaring the gold while entering the country.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigations

The gold has been officially seized, and the woman has been arrested in accordance with the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine any links between this incident and a potential international smuggling network.
