Following intense public scrutiny and continuous pressure from opposition parties regarding the recent incident at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), West Bengal’s Sports Minister, Arup Biswas, has expressed his desire to be relieved of his duties.
Sources indicate that the minister has sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing her as “Didi” (elder sister). In the communication, he states that a formal investigative committee has already been established concerning the events at the Yuva Bharati Stadium. He wishes to step away from his current responsibilities in the Sports department to ensure that the probe can be conducted impartially and without any external influence.
The letter’s image was first shared by Trinamool Congress (TMC) State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh, though the signature of Arup Biswas was reportedly not visible on the shared copy.
Context of Show Cause Notices and Police Suspension
The controversy stems from an unspecified major incident that took place at the stadium, which prompted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to announce the formation of an investigation committee. This committee has since taken strict action against several high-ranking officials.
The actions taken against police and department officials include:
Show Cause Notices: Multiple high-profile police officers, including the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner, have been issued show-cause notices demanding an explanation for their conduct or lapses related to the incident.
Suspension and Departmental Investigation: DCP Anish Sarkar has been placed under suspension, and a formal departmental inquiry has been initiated against him until the investigation is complete.
Action Against Sports Officials: The state’s Youth and Sports Department Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, has also been served a show-cause notice.
Debkumar Nandan has been removed from his position as CEO of the Yuva Bharati Krirangan.
Show Cause to DGP: Notably, the Director General of Police (DGP) for the State of West Bengal, Rajiv Kumar, has also been issued a show-cause notice.
Chief Minister Accepts Request
It is currently unclear whether Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accepted Minister Biswas’s request for relief from the portfolio.
TMC’s Kunal Ghosh stated that the Chief Minister is “considering the entire matter.” According to sources, the Chief Minister is expected to keep the Sports department portfolio under her direct supervision for the time being.
Despite the developments, the opposition remains critical. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, reacted to the news by stating, “We do not want a resignation; we demand an arrest.”
