West Bengal Assembly Elections will be Held in “violence-free environment”: CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent address, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar urged the electorate of West Bengal to actively participate in the forthcoming assembly elections. He emphasized the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process, stating that the elections will occur in a “violence-free and pressure-free environment.” The CEC described the upcoming elections as a celebration of democracy, encouraging all voters in the state to participate in the voting process.

Details on Seats and Electoral Preparations

West Bengal comprises a total of 294 assembly seats, including 210 general seats, 68 reserved for Scheduled Castes, and 16 for Scheduled Tribes. During a press conference, Gyanesh Kumar reassured voters that the Election Commission had thoroughly reviewed all necessary preparations for the elections. His remarks underscored that the Commission had been actively engaged in the state for two days to assess the electoral readiness and had discussions with booth-level officers regarding logistical arrangements.

Public Prayer for Non-Violent Elections

As part of his visit, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar paid homage at the Dakshineshwar Kali temple in Kolkata. Following his prayers, he reaffirmed the Election Commission’s dedication to conducting a non-violent and pressure-free electoral process in West Bengal. Speaking to the media outside the temple, he reiterated the importance of a peaceful voting atmosphere.

Protests Amid the CEC’s Visit

Despite the assurances of a peaceful election, a group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers staged a protest outside the Dakshineshwar Kali temple. They displayed black flags and banners reading, “Go back, Gyanesh Kumar.” The demonstration highlighted ongoing tensions between the TMC and the Election Commission, particularly in relation to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal.

Commissioner’s Observations on Election Preparation

Along with Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi were also present in West Bengal to oversee the preparations for the elections. Their collective visit aims to ensure that all necessary measures are in place for the state’s legislative assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
