“All We Want is a Discussion and Assurance From Government”: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on LPG shortage

The CSR Journal Magazine

In response to rising concerns regarding Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) shortages, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has emphasized the necessity for a discussion in Parliament. He stated that such a platform is essential for addressing public concerns and providing necessary assurances.

Tharoor mentioned the significant challenges citizens are facing, indicating the long queues for LPG cylinders that have become a common sight. He highlighted reports from restaurants that have been forced to limit their menus due to a lack of cooking gas, expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation in the country. He urged the government to take these issues seriously and not to operate merely based on their preferences.

LPG Shortage Impacting Daily Life Across the Country

The LPG crisis is reportedly affecting various regions, including Madhya Pradesh’s capital, Bhopal, where restaurants have adapted by shifting to induction cooking methods. This change is partially attributed to disruptions in global shipping, particularly linked to military tensions in the Middle East and the resultant impact on gas supplies in regions like the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, residents in Bhopal have been seen waiting in long lines at gas agencies, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Temples Adopting Traditional Cooking Methods Amid Shortages

In Mangaluru, the management of the historic Kadri Shri Manjunatha Temple has resorted to using traditional firewood for preparing daily meals, known as Annaprasada, due to sudden shortages of cooking gas. This measure aims to ensure that meals continue to be served without disruption to the approximately 1,500 devotees visiting the temple each day. Temple staff and volunteers have organized traditional cooking methods to maintain the usual timetable for serving meals, further illustrating the widespread effects of the gas shortage.

Government Response to LPG Production Concerns

The government has responded to the LPG shortage claims, stating that domestic LPG production has seen an increase of around 25 percent. It has also assured that this production is directed towards meeting household needs. For non-domestic LPG, the administration has indicated that priority is given to essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions, aiming to manage the crisis effectively. The focus remains on balancing production and distribution to alleviate the current challenges faced by citizens across the nation.
