In a chilling case of domestic violence from Bihar’s Nalanda district, a man allegedly set his second wife on fire after she opposed his intention to marry another woman. The accused, Vikas Kumar, is currently on the run along with members of his family.
Wife Unaware of Existing First Marriage
The victim, 25-year-old Sunita Devi, married Vikas five years ago. According to her father, the family only learned after the wedding that Kumar had already been married and had never divorced his first wife. Despite the betrayal, Vikas’s family convinced Sunita to stay with him.
Sunita gave birth to two children, both of whom tragically died shortly after birth. Tensions in the marriage worsened when Kumar began expressing his desire to marry a girlfriend. Frequent arguments eventually led Sunita to leave him and return to her parents’ home.
Persuaded to Return, Then Burnt Alive
Just before the Durga Puja festival, Kumar visited Sunita at her parental home and convinced her to come back with him. However, things took a horrific turn shortly afterward.
At around 1 AM on Saturday, Sunita reportedly called her family, telling them that Vikas had poured petrol on her, locked her in the courtyard, opened the gas valves, and set her on fire. In the heartbreaking call, she said she didn’t believe she would survive. Her phone was switched off soon after.
Family Foils Attempted Secret Cremation
Sunita’s family rushed to her marital home, only to find that Kumar and his family were attempting to cremate her body. Upon seeing Sunita’s relatives approach, they fled the scene.
Police arrived shortly afterward and launched an investigation. A forensic team collected evidence from the site, and the body was handed over to Sunita’s family after a postmortem examination.
Police Investigation Ongoing
“The accused and his family are absconding. Search operations are ongoing, and a case has been registered,” said Station House Officer Anil Kumar Pandey.
The gruesome murder has sparked outrage in the local community and renewed concerns over the safety and rights of women in domestic settings.
