A significant development has come to light in the Varanasi gangrape case. The alleged case that involves a 19-year-old woman seems to have taken a massive turn. Initially the police arrested at least 14 individuals in connection to the alleged crime.
The police authorities have announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to re-examine the allegations against the accused. According to reports, this decision follows the emergence of new digital evidence submitted by families of the accused. The new revelations have prompted officials to temporarily suspend further arrests in the case.
Why did police halt the arrests?
Meanwhile the decision to halt the arrests comes after the families of several accused individuals submitted evidence related to the case. The evidence submitted includes videos, photographs, and Instagram chats. The family members of the accused claim that the evidence contradicts the woman’s allegations and raise serious doubts about the case.
Fresh Claims raises doubts
According to the police, the families of the accused, along with a woman claiming to be a friend of the complainant, have raised serious questions about the survivor’s claims. They allegedly presented videos, photos, and Instagram chats which, they argue, contradict the narrative.
The friend of the alleged victim claimed that the complainant frequently expressed her frustration over restrictions at home and enjoyed social outings. She further stated that the survivor had not mentioned any assault during their multiple interactions.
Contradictory Digital Evidence Emerges
According to reports, among the many pieces of evidence provided by the families of the accused emerged a video. The video reportedly shows the woman on April 1 at Continental Cafe with some of the accused.
Another such social media activity during the week of the alleged crime that occurred between March 29 to April 4. During this period the woman was seen smiling, riding motorcycles, and actively engaging online. Furthermore, chats retrieved from her Instagram suggest that she was in touch with some accused voluntarily. In addition the complainant was allegedly making social plans during the time she claimed to be held captive.
14 Arrests So Far, Police Reassessing Case
The police informed that 14 individuals have been arrested. This includes Raj Khan and Shahbaj in recent days. Of the 12 identified suspects, 11 are now in custody. An FIR was filed on April 6. This comes a day after the complainant’s parents reported that their daughter had been missing for a week. However, she later returned home claiming she was drugged and gangraped by 23 men.
A medical test conducted by the authorities revealed that the woman had hepatitis B. However, she did not show signs of physical injury or trauma consistent with her allegations. The findings of the medical report, and the digital evidence, has complicated the case further.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Mohit Agarwal confirmed that the SIT will re-examine all claims and evidence before proceeding with any more arrests. He also stated arrests related to the case will be halted for now.
Prime Minister Modi Seeks Accountability
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also briefed on the case during his April 11 visit to Varanasi. The PM directed senior officials to ensure swift and impartial action is taken in the case. He further stressed the importance of a thorough investigation and justice for the victim. He also stated that if the charges are proven, or appropriate action if the claims are found false.
