The Central Government has sanctioned and disbursed funds as part of the Fifteenth Finance Commission’s “Untied” grant specifically for Panchayati Raj Institutions and Rural Local Bodies in Uttarakhand, as revealed in a recent announcement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

This grant is intended to bolster the panchayat system and facilitate local development initiatives tailored to community needs. The second installment of this Untied grant has allocated Rs 91.31 crore for the state, which will provide support to all 13 District Panchayats, 95 Development Blocks, and 7,784 qualifying Gram Panchayats.

Additional Funding from Withheld Amount

In conjunction with the recent grant, an additional Rs 1.84 crore has been released for 216 eligible Gram Panchayats from the previously withheld portion of the first installment for the 2025-26 financial year. This release aims to enhance the financial resources available to local bodies involved in governance and rural development.

Recommendations by Union Ministries

The release of grants is facilitated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, specifically the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. These ministries assess the needs and recommend the allocation of funds for Panchayati Raj Institutions and Rural Local Bodies. Following these recommendations, the Ministry of Finance proceeds with the distribution of the funds as per the established protocols.

Panchayat Buildings Construction Underway

During a recent assembly session, Uttarakhand Minister Satpal Maharaj reported that, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami during his second term, a total of 819 Panchayat buildings have been either built or renovated across the state. CM Dhami has emphasized the need for the Panchayati Raj Department to undertake a concentrated effort in reconstructing deteriorated buildings. As a result of these directives, the department has made significant progress in this initiative, while work continues on the remaining structures that need attention.
