UPI Expands To 11 Countries As July Transactions Reach Rs 29.87 Lakh Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has extended its services to eleven countries, achieving a significant milestone with transactions totalling Rs 29.87 lakh crore in July 2026. This expansion is indicative of UPI’s growing role in the global digital payments landscape, a fact underscored by a recent government report.

The Press Information Bureau published a report titled “UPI Transforming India’s Payment Landscape,” which details UPI’s transformative journey over the past decade. The interface has reportedly increased in usage by 12,000 times since its introduction and is regarded as a cornerstone of India’s digital payments infrastructure.

Information from the International Monetary Fund highlights that UPI accounted for approximately 49 per cent of the global real-time payment transaction volume in 2024, showcasing its significance on an international scale. Such figures underline the success of UPI as an essential tool for both local and cross-border transactions.

Countries Where UPI Is Operational

Currently, UPI services are accessible in Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and the Maldives. Greece and the Maldives are the latest additions to this growing list, demonstrating UPI’s expanding international presence.

The launch of UPI in these countries allows for seamless acceptance of payments and enables cross-border remittances, thereby enhancing the convenience for users wishing to transact internationally. The platform’s interoperability has been crucial in facilitating these operations.

Since its initial rollout, UPI has seen a series of advancements. Notably, UPI AutoPay was introduced between 2020 and 2022 to allow for recurring payments such as Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) and Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs). Moreover, UPI 123PAY made it possible for feature-phone users to execute payments through interactive voice response and missed calls, thereby broadening access.

Technological Advancements and Regulatory Changes

UPI Lite was also launched to cater to low-value transactions that do not require a Personal Identification Number (PIN), enhancing usability for everyday transactions. In a move towards integration, credit cards were subsequently linked to the UPI framework. These enhancements are part of a broader strategy to simplify digital payments.

In 2024, the introduction of UPI Circle aimed to facilitate delegated payments, further diversifying the platform’s functionality. Alongside these features, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the tax payment limit through UPI from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, thereby enhancing its utility for users.

Additionally, limits were revised for UPI 123PAY, which was increased to Rs 10,000, while the UPI Lite wallet limit was raised to Rs 5,000. The per-transaction limit also underwent an increase to Rs 1,000, demonstrating a commitment to enhance user experience.

Moreover, in 2025, UPI integrated on-device biometric authentication and Aadhaar-based face authentication for PIN onboarding. These measures were taken to strengthen security protocols, ensuring a safer digital payment environment. The government’s focus on these advancements suggests an ongoing commitment to modernising India’s payment ecosystem.

In summation, UPI’s expansion and ongoing innovations highlight its vital role in India’s economic framework and its growing recognition globally as a reliable payment solution. The advancements in technology and regulatory support have positioned UPI as a frontrunner in the digital payments arena.
