The India Pharma Archives was officially inaugurated by Anupriya Patel, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers, during the IIMA Healthcare Summit held in Ahmedabad on August 19, 2026. This endeavour aims to preserve 125 years of history related to the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Among the dignitaries present were Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Manoj Joshi, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, alongside numerous industry leaders and scholars.

Growth of the Initiative

The initiative has been supported by the earlier publication of a significant coffee-table book titled “The Alchemy of Cure,” which established the groundwork for the archives. The India Pharma Archives is intended to expand upon this foundation by creating a comprehensive collection of historical materials from the pharmaceutical sector. This includes company histories, archival collections, films, interview transcripts, and timelines that enhance the educational resources available to students, researchers, and policymakers.

The design of the India Pharma Archives goes beyond that of a conventional exhibition. It is conceptualised as a dynamic and continuously evolving archive that aims to represent the living history of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape. This unique approach is intended to make the institutional memory of the industry more accessible, thus enriching the knowledge base for future generations.

Industry representatives have highlighted the significance of the archives. Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences and President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), remarked on the historical importance of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. He stated that the archives celebrate a remarkable narrative of scientific achievement, entrepreneurship, and global influence. They are expected to serve as a platform for fostering new ideas, collaborations, and innovative solutions to future healthcare challenges.

Educational and Historical Significance

Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General of the IPA, underscored the dual purpose of the India Pharma Archives. He noted that it is not only focused on preserving the rich history of the industry but also on safeguarding the legacy of innovation for future generations. By creating an educational resource, the archives aim to provide valuable insights for students and researchers, fostering a deeper understanding of the resilience and breakthroughs that have characterised India’s pharmaceutical sector.

Moreover, the archives are expected to reinforce India’s emerging status as a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry. By showcasing innovations and achievements, it aims to inspire future developments in healthcare solutions and strengthen the sector’s contribution to global health scenarios.

The India Pharma Archives, thus, stands as a crucial undertaking that reflects the collective history of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape while simultaneously laying the groundwork for future advancements. This initiative embodies the spirit of collaboration and progress that characterises the nation’s evolving healthcare sector.
