The United Kingdom (UK) has agreed to offer limited military support to Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces escalating threats from Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are reportedly supported by Iran. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Monday. It highlights the UK’s commitment to regional stability and its own national interests.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is set to conduct air-to-air refuelling for Saudi aircraft for a duration of several weeks, with the arrangement subject to ongoing assessment. While addressing the media on his way to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Burnham clarified that this military assistance is intended to safeguard both British and regional interests in light of increasing concerns regarding potential disruptions to crucial oil shipping routes.

The Prime Minister emphasised the need to ensure the security of these pathways, which are vital for global commerce. As part of this initiative, a single RAF Voyager will be deployed to refuel Saudi planes engaged in what are described as “defensive” missions. This military cooperation is the latest measure taken by the UK to support Saudi Arabia amidst rising tensions associated with Houthi military activities.

Escalation of Houthi Attacks

The conflict between the Houthis and Yemen’s Saudi-backed government has intensified recently, notably with rebels increasing their missile and drone assaults on Saudi Arabia. Reports have confirmed that a missile attack targeted Riyadh on Saturday, which was successfully intercepted. These actions are part of a broader strategy to confront Saudi Arabia and disrupt its oil supply capabilities.

The Houthis have publicly declared a blockade affecting Saudi shipping routes in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea. Furthermore, they have launched attacks on vessels associated with Saudi interests and on oil facilities within the kingdom. This is particularly concerning as Saudi Arabia is recognised as the world’s leading oil exporter and such threats could significantly impact global oil markets.

Earlier in September, the Houthis made significant territorial advances in Yemen, capturing the strategic port city of Mokha as well as important islands in the Red Sea. This development has reportedly enhanced their ability to monitor shipping traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb, a crucial conduit through which around twelve per cent of global trade typically passes.

International Response and Defence Cooperation

The UK government has condemned the Houthi attacks. It reiterated its commitment to collaborate with international partners to uphold regional stability, safeguard civilians, and facilitate humanitarian access in affected areas. UK officials have previously refrained from detailing specific operational strategies. However, they have acknowledged the close defence partnership that exists between the UK and Saudi Arabia.

In light of the current situation, the US has not shown any inclination towards military involvement this time, despite having previously conducted strikes against the Houthis during the administrations of President Biden and President Trump. Recently, reports indicated that Saudi Arabia had reached out to its allies. These include countries such as France, Pakistan, and Egypt. They’re seeking air-defence support to counter the ongoing missile and drone threats from the Houthis and similar groups aligned with Iran.

This situation reflects the complex nexus of military cooperation and geopolitical dynamics in the region, as the UK extends a temporary but essential military role in response to the renewed threats posed by Houthi forces in Yemen and the surrounding maritime environments. The UK’s limited support aims to address the immediate challenges faced by Saudi Arabia as it navigates escalating tensions.
