Turkish Airlines Makes Emergency Landing in Kolkata Due to Engine Fire Scare

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Turkish Airlines flight travelling from Kathmandu to Istanbul made an emergency landing at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Sunday following a suspected malfunction in one of its engines. The aircraft, which was carrying 234 passengers and crew on board, landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

The flight, operating as THY-727, departed from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport at 1:29 PM. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot detected a possible issue with the aircraft’s right engine and alerted air traffic control in Kathmandu. Despite the situation, the aircraft continued to operate using a single engine and did not return to the Nepali airport due to operational and safety considerations.

Kolkata Air Traffic Control Receives Emergency Request

Upon identification of a suspected right-engine fire, the flight’s captain made contact with Kolkata Air Traffic Control (ATC) and requested permission to land. The aircraft was granted immediate clearance, and necessary emergency protocols were activated on the ground to ensure a safe landing.

Emergency services and technical teams were mobilised at the airport prior to the aircraft’s arrival. The aircraft landed safely in Kolkata without any further complications. All 234 people on board, including passengers and crew members, disembarked without incident.

Post-Landing Inspection and Flight Status

Following the emergency landing, a full technical inspection of the aircraft was conducted by aviation authorities in Kolkata. After the preliminary assessment, officials declared the aircraft unfit to continue its long-haul journey to Istanbul in its current condition.

The nature of the engine issue has not yet been confirmed publicly. However, the suspected malfunction led to the grounding of the aircraft for further investigation and repair. Authorities from the airline are working in coordination with local officials to arrange alternate travel plans for the affected passengers.

Flight Route Altered as Precaution

The aircraft initially had the option to return to Kathmandu or divert to another airport within proximity, such as Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa, Nepal. However, the flight crew chose to proceed to Kolkata instead, opting for better-equipped facilities to handle potential emergency aircraft situations.

Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority Deputy Spokesperson Gyanendra Bhul stated that the aircraft experienced a malfunction in flight and that the pilot had informed the control tower in Kathmandu before choosing to proceed to Kolkata.

The incident has prompted a thorough review of the flight’s operational history and maintenance records. Turkish Airlines has not yet issued a formal statement about the incident. Airport officials in Kolkata confirmed that all safety protocols were followed and passenger well-being remained the priority throughout the emergency procedure.

Further updates are expected as authorities continue their investigation into the technical issue that impacted the flight.
