Trump Pushes for Direct Talks Between Putin and Zelenskyy After High-Stakes DC Meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

The meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, D.C., has captured global attention, coming at a critical time for the war in Ukraine. With European leaders in attendance and recent developments in the region adding urgency, the summit aimed to chart a way forward for ending a conflict that has gripped Eastern Europe for over three years.

A Diplomatic Gathering in Washington

On Monday, President Trump hosted President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office at the White House. The meeting, which lasted for about an hour, set the stage for wide-ranging discussions on the future of Ukraine, especially in light of Trump’s recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Immediately after the Trump-Zelenskyy discussion, a joint session followed with high-profile attendees including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and key European and NATO representatives.

The stakes were high, as both Kyiv’s position and Moscow’s demands were under scrutiny. While recent reports suggested that Putin conveyed terms for a peace deal—including Ukraine giving up control of certain remaining regions like Donetsk—Zelenskyy and Ukraine rejected any such prospect. Currently, Ukraine retains about a quarter of Donetsk, using it as a vital defensive buffer, making the negotiations particularly sensitive for Kyiv.

Security Guarantees and Push for Ceasefire

Key among the topics discussed was the concept of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Both Trump and Zelenskyy addressed this, with Trump, for the first time, expressing willingness for the US to provide such guarantees as an element of any prospective peace arrangement. Zelenskyy, backed by European leaders, repeatedly stressed that Ukraine’s future security is tied closely to both American and European assurances.

The matter of a ceasefire also became central to the talks. European leaders, particularly the German and French heads of government, voiced strong calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Macron described a ceasefire as a “necessity” while Chancellor Merz insisted all parties would like to see fighting stopped as soon as possible. Trump, however, shifted his stance after meeting with Putin, appearing to lean towards a model that would allow negotiations and fighting to run parallel for some time, which is closer to Moscow’s current position.

Arrangements for a Direct Zelenskyy-Putin Meeting

In what could be a significant diplomatic step, President Trump announced after his discussions that he is launching efforts to arrange a direct meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Putin. Trump indicated he had already had a phone call with Putin from the Oval Office during the day and began formal arrangements for a face-to-face meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, potentially at a neutral location. Trump further said he would join the two in a planned trilateral summit, although specifics regarding time and place were not provided. According to officials, Trump’s vice president and special envoy are coordinating closely with both Moscow and Kyiv to make the summit happen.

The Kremlin confirmed Putin’s readiness to meet Zelenskyy, and European leaders present urged that any agreement must preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure reliable long-term peace. Finland’s president, present at the White House, voiced doubts over Putin’s intent, stating, “Putin is rarely to be trusted. So now it remains to be seen whether he has the courage to come to this type of meeting, or is he once again playing for time?”

Both Zelenskyy and Trump described their own bilateral meeting as “very good”, with the general atmosphere between the two notably more cordial than their previous interactions. Yet, there remain many unanswered questions about the specifics of any future ceasefire or the proposed security guarantees. Observers have highlighted that while Monday’s discussions mark a constructive diplomatic step, the lack of concrete details on a new peace settlement leaves much to be resolved in the coming days and weeks.
