The United States has classified Saudi Arabia under a Level 3 travel advisory, urging citizens to “Reconsider travel” due to various risks. This advisory was released by the US State Department on September 16, 2026, focusing on threats from Iranian drones and missile strikes, armed conflicts, and local laws impacting social media. A separate Level 4 warning has been issued for the Yemen border, advising against any travel due to terrorism risks.

The State Department specifically highlighted ongoing threats linked to Iranian-backed militia activities in the region. Considering past incidents where American interests have been targeted, it noted that armed conflict and terrorism remain significant concerns. The advisory further indicated that these risks are heightened in certain areas of Saudi Arabia.

American citizens have been warned about possible exit bans that can hinder their departure from Saudi Arabia due to ongoing legal investigations or unpaid fees. Such bans are stated to potentially last for many years and can complicate the situation for expatriates in the country.

Risks of Drone and Missile Attacks

The advisory detailed the threat posed by Iranian drone and missile operations, particularly since hostilities increased between the US and Iran earlier in 2026. The US has attributed several missile and drone strikes targeting Saudi cities and infrastructure to Iranian forces. The advisory mentions that locations like airports, military bases, energy facilities, and diplomatic missions have been at risk during these aggressive activities.

Moreover, there has been an alert regarding the risk from falling debris resulting from intercepted drones and missiles. Citizens residing or working near energy facilities and military installations are advised to be particularly vigilant, especially in areas closer to the Yemen border.

Despite the ongoing tensions, commercial flights in and out of Saudi Arabia continue operations, although they have faced significant disruptions at various times. The US emphasised that strikes could occur unpredictably, especially around holiday periods, increasing the risk for foreigners.

Concerns Over Local Laws and Social Media Activity

The travel advisory also pinpointed concerns regarding the stringent enforcement of local laws in Saudi Arabia. US citizens could face detention if their online activities or social media posts are perceived as critical of the Saudi government or deemed to disrupt public order. The advisory indicated that individuals have been prosecuted in the past for expressions made while outside the country.

According to the advisory, penalties for such online activity can be severe, with prison sentences reaching up to 45 years in extreme cases. This has raised alarm among American expatriates and tourists about the implications of their online presence.

In line with these developments, the US government has restricted travel for its employees in Saudi Arabia, prohibiting them from travelling within 32 kilometres of the Yemen border. Such measures require special clearance even for essential travel to regions like Jizan, Asir, Najran, and Qatif due to safety concerns.

Recent Escalation of Military Tensions

The latest advisory comes in the wake of a recent incident where Saudi air defences intercepted a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels near the sensitive area of Mecca. The Saudi-led coalition stated that any threats to the security of Islam’s two holiest sites are considered a “red line.” Major General Turki Al-Malki characterised the drone launch as a “hostile and terrorist act,” intensifying existing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement.

This escalation underscores the precarious situation in the region, as security concerns are likely to persist. With ongoing military operations and heightened rhetoric, the landscape continues to be unstable for both residents and visitors in Saudi Arabia.
