US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in significant discussions at the White House on Tuesday, addressing crucial topics such as artificial intelligence, the conflict in Iran, and agricultural market access for US farmers. This extensive meeting featured both ceremonial elements and meaningful dialogue, contributing to ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations.

President Trump highlighted the importance of collaborating with President Xi to foster a “better future” for both countries. The meeting featured a formal reception at the South Portico, followed by a military review in the Rose Garden before the two leaders convened in the Oval Office for in-depth talks.

Upon arrival, President Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were greeted by Trump and First Lady Melania. A military band performed as they stood together on a red carpet. Xi arrived in a black Hongqi N701 SUV, emphasizing the ceremonial nature of the visit.

During his opening remarks, Trump expressed that their relationship had evolved into a “truly great friendship,” which he attributed to mutual respect and shared interests. He referenced historical cooperation during World War II, signalling a unity that he hoped would extend into their future dealings. The discussions reportedly covered the current geopolitical climate, including Taiwan, which Xi reiterated as a critical issue.

President Xi emphasised the necessity for peaceful coexistence and broader cooperation between the United States and China. He encouraged both nations to pursue a healthy form of competition while maintaining a commitment to avoiding confrontation. Xi’s reference to the so-called Thucydides Trap, which suggests that an emerging power and an established power may lead to conflict, pointed towards a desire for peaceful interactions between their countries.

Xiang stated, “We do not need to avoid mentioning competition, but our competition should be a healthy one, kept within bounds,” reinforcing the ideas of dialogue and collaboration to prevent misunderstandings. His remarks highlighted the importance of direct communication between their military forces to sustain stability.

Focus on AI and Trade Relations

One of the pivotal topics was artificial intelligence, where Xi expressed the joint obligation of both nations to ensure that technology remains under human control. He advocated for responsible development and management of AI, stressing its potential benefits for the global populace. As the summit progressed, reports indicated that Xi urged Trump to transform the vision of a stable and constructive US-China relationship into actionable outcomes.

The conversations surrounding trade were underscored by discussions between finance ministers earlier in the week, where the US proposed a new notification protocol for incidents related to AI. In terms of trade agreements, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that Trump and Xi might either arrive at a broader pact by January or further extend the existing trade truce.

This initiative follows a significant increase in tariffs during last year’s trade disputes, which saw peak US tariffs at 145 per cent and corresponding Chinese levies at 125 per cent. The meeting ultimately balanced symbolism with strategic conversations on crucial issues affecting both nations.
