Top 10 Firms Experience ₹1.55 Trillion Drop in Market Capitalisation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The combined market valuation of eight of the top ten most valuable firms in India fell by ₹1.55 trillion last week, primarily driven by substantial losses in HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance. This decline occurred during a holiday-shortened trading week, during which the 30-share BSE Sensex plummeted by 1,605.44 points, equating to a 2.15 per cent decrease. Concurrently, the 50-share NSE Nifty index also experienced a significant drop of 546.15 points, or 2.36 per cent.

The overall market capitalisation of firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) decreased by ₹20,78,774.28 crore over four trading sessions, falling from ₹4,72,62,167.42 crore on October 16 to ₹4,51,83,393.14 crore. This substantial reduction reflects broader trends in the equity markets, which have been under pressure in recent weeks.

Among the ten largest companies, eight saw a decline in their market valuations, amounting to ₹1,55,671.9 crore. In contrast, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) were the only firms to report valuation gains during this period.

Major Contributors to the Decline

HDFC Bank was one of the most affected companies, with its market valuation dropping by ₹55,506.95 crore, bringing its total to ₹10,67,121.12 crore. The bank’s stock witnessed a decline of 5 per cent over the week, contributing significantly to the overall market downturn.

Bajaj Finance also faced a considerable loss, with its valuation eroding by ₹34,180.51 crore, resulting in a total market capitalisation of ₹5,77,146.21 crore. Other major firms that experienced declines included Reliance Industries, which saw its market valuation decrease by ₹27,065.08 crore to ₹16,10,372.11 crore, and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), which fell by ₹21,062.24 crore to ₹4,81,142.58 crore.

Further losses were reported for Bharti Airtel, whose market capitalisation dropped by ₹9,360.75 crore to ₹11,79,454.70 crore. Additionally, State Bank of India recorded a decrease of ₹4,338.46 crore, bringing its valuation to ₹8,83,384.38 crore. Infosys also saw a decline in its market capitalisation by ₹2,881.38 crore, resulting in a total of ₹4,68,528.03 crore, while ICICI Bank’s valuation fell by ₹1,276.53 crore to ₹10,01,594.91 crore.

Gains Amidst the Losses

Despite the overall downturn, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a notable increase in its market valuation, rising by ₹23,517.56 crore to reach ₹9,14,652.52 crore. This growth highlights TCS’s resilience in a challenging market environment.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) also experienced a positive shift, with its market capitalisation climbing by ₹1,788.66 crore to a total of ₹5,01,513.72 crore. These gains provide a contrast to the broader losses observed among the majority of the top firms.

As of now, Reliance Industries remains the most valuable firm in India, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, TCS, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, L&T, LIC, and Infosys. The current market dynamics suggest a period of volatility, with investors closely monitoring developments in the equity markets.
