Three new judges, Justice NV Anjaria, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Justice AS Chandurkar took oath on Friday, May 30, 2025. These three judges of the Supreme Court restored the apex court to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges. This number also includes the Chief Justice of India.
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice BR Gavai, had recommended their elevation in its meeting held on May 26. Meanwhile, the Centre cleared their appointments on May 29. According to reports, Supreme Court judge Justice Bela M Trivedi is set to superannuate on June 9, one vacancy of judge will arise.
Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Law Minister, announced their appointment on X on 29 May. This comes days after the apex court collegium headed by the CJI recommended the appointment of the three judges to the top court.
1. Justice NV Anjaria
Justice NV Anjaria, currently Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, began his legal career at the Gujarat High Court in August 1988. He was appointed an Additional Judge there in November 2011 and became a permanent judge in September 2013. He then took oath as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in February 2024.
Justice Anjaria graduated from HL College of Commerce, Ahmedabad. He did LL.B from Sir LA Shah Law College in 1988. Justice Anjaria obtained a Masters Degree in Law in 1989 from University School of Law, Ahmedabad.
2. Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, enrolled as an advocate in July 1989. He practiced at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal in Jodhpur.
He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court in January 2013 and became a permanent judge two years later. He assumed office as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in February 2024.
3. Justice AS Chandurkar
Justice AS Chandurkar, a judge of the Bombay High Court, began practicing law in Mumbai in July 1988 before shifting to Nagpur in 1992. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in June 2013.
He graduated from Ness Wadia College, Pune and also ILS Law College, Pune. Justice AS Chandurkar joined the Bar on 21 July 1988 and began practice in Mumbai.
Their elevation fills the vacancies left by the retirement of former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Abhay S Oka and Hrishikesh Roy. With Justice Bela M Trivedi scheduled to retire on June 9, another vacancy will arise soon.
