Government to Invest Rs 28,840 Crore in UDAN Scheme Expansion

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government is set to invest approximately Rs 28,840 crore over the next decade to enhance the UDAN regional connectivity initiative. This announcement was made by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu during a press briefing in Mysuru, Karnataka, on August 21, 2026.

Naidu stated that the investment is aimed at improving air connectivity across India and taking the UDAN scheme to a new level after a decade of notable achievements. The Minister emphasised that the scheme, established under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, is a flagship endeavour of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

During the meeting, Naidu shared insights from the Civil Aviation Consultative Committee, which included several Members of Parliament. The discussions centred around the accomplishments under the UDAN scheme and the subsequent strategies for its future expansion. The emphasis was placed on collaboration with states to enhance aviation infrastructure and operations.

Efforts to Enhance Aviation Infrastructure

The Union Minister mentioned ongoing engagement with various state governments to upgrade airports and ensure more efficient management. He highlighted discussions on strategies to facilitate better connectivity and improve operations within the civil aviation sector.

Naidu remarked that the consultations with stakeholders are crucial for ensuring that the infrastructure developments meet the rising demand for air travel and cargo transport. The government’s proactive stance and collaborative efforts aim to create a robust aviation ecosystem in India.

The focus on improved efficiency is expected to lead to enhanced passenger experience and operational efficiency at airports across the country. Such initiatives are vital for not only meeting current demands but also preparing for future challenges in the aviation industry.

Launch of Transshipment Cargo Reform

In a related development, Naidu recently inaugurated an improved phase of India’s transshipment cargo reforms at Terminal 2 of Delhi International Airport. This initiative is designed to streamline cargo handling and significantly reduce transit times and associated costs.

The recent pilot programme on the Chennai-Delhi-Frankfurt route demonstrated a substantial reduction in average transit time, decreasing from 60 hours to just 20 hours. Since its launch on June 20, 2023, this initiative has effectively transshipped 280 metric tonnes of cargo and has reportedly increased aircraft capacity utilisation from 75 per cent to nearly 100 per cent.

Furthermore, the network has recently expanded to incorporate additional cities including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, as well as international destinations like London and Copenhagen. The Ministry of Civil Aviation anticipates that these expansions will raise Air India’s monthly cargo capacity on these routes from 1,763 metric tonnes to 3,183 metric tonnes, reflecting an increase of almost 80 per cent.

Vision for Future Airports in India

The overarching goal of the government is to transform Indian airports into significant global hubs for both passengers and cargo. The initiatives established under the UDAN scheme and cargo reforms are central to the government’s vision of establishing an efficient and competitive aviation sector.

This ambitious vision requires comprehensive planning and collaboration with various stakeholders within the aviation industry. The government aims to facilitate growth not only in passenger traffic but also in cargo handling capabilities, aligning with international best practices.

The concerted efforts to enhance infrastructure, connectivity, and operational efficiency represent a significant step forward for the Indian aviation sector, positioning it favourably on the global landscape. As these initiatives unfold, they are expected to yield tangible benefits for the economy and enhance overall connectivity.
