Telangana Liberation Day, celebrated on September 17, marks the historic moment when the region transitioned from Nizam rule to becoming part of the Indian Union. N. Ramchander Rao, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana, highlighted the importance of this date in an interview, emphasising the pride it instils in the people of Telangana. He articulated that the day represents the conclusion of oppressive governance and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the region.

According to Rao, the BJP has been actively commemorating this significant occasion annually, and the Central government has initiated formal celebrations. The BJP chief indicated that beyond the party’s efforts, the day has gained recognition at the national level through official festivities, particularly parades involving paramilitary and security forces that have taken place for the last four years.

Rao also expressed his best wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday coinciding with Telangana Liberation Day, wishing him health and longevity. This alignment of events adds to the significance of the day for the BJP and the state.

Historical Context of the Liberation

The liberation of Telangana is rooted in a complex history of struggle against the Nizam’s rule. On September 17, 1948, following military operations known as ‘Operation Polo’, the regime was dismantled, marking the end of 13 months during which the population faced severe repression and violence, especially from the Razakars, a paramilitary group loyal to the Nizam. Rao recounted these events to highlight the historic nature of the day.

In a post on social media, Rao detailed how this day signifies the surrender of the Nizam and the subsequent full integration of the Hyderabad State into India. He marked the occasion by unfurling the National Flag at his residence, recognising the sacrifices made by those who endured the oppressive regime.

The importance of this liberation is further echoed by other leaders such as former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, who also paid tribute to the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He pointed out that while India celebrated its independence on August 15, 1947, the people of Hyderabad had to endure additional struggles until liberation was achieved on September 17, 1948.

Calls for Educational Recognition and Remembrance

Dattatreya urged for the story of Telangana’s liberation to be included in school curricula, proposing that understanding regional history is vital for the younger generation. He stressed the importance of respecting this day and remembering the sacrifices made for freedom from the Nizam’s rule.

He also called on the state government to officially observe this historic milestone, suggesting that formal recognition would reinforce the significance of the struggle and educate future generations about their heritage. This initiative aims to ensure that the memories of freedom fighters continue to inspire and inform the present and future citizens of Telangana.

The appeals from prominent leaders like Rao and Dattatreya highlight a growing acknowledgement of the importance of the history of Telangana’s liberation.
