The CSR Journal Magazine

An SUV was swept away by strong monsoon currents in Dehradun’s flood-affected Prem Nagar area late at night, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to another. The incident highlights the dangers posed by the heavy rainfall and the ongoing flooding in the region, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

Rescue Operation Details

The accident occurred near Kandoli Bridge on the Lower Kandoli-Paundha Road within the Prem Nagar police station jurisdiction. The vehicle, a Hyundai Creta with the registration number RJ 13 CE 5641, was reportedly carrying a young man and two women at the time it was caught in the fast-moving water and swept away.

Upon receiving notification of the incident, a team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in Dakpathar swiftly arrived at the scene to initiate a search and rescue operation. Despite challenging weather conditions and powerful monsoon currents, the SDRF personnel worked through the night to locate the victims.

During the operation, the SDRF team successfully found one of the passengers, Sahaj, daughter of Gulshan Baweja, approximately two kilometres downstream from the site of the accident. She was discovered with injuries and was promptly rescued. Rescuers provided immediate assistance before handing her over to the police for further support.

Casualties and Identification

The ongoing search efforts led to the unfortunate recovery of two bodies. One of the deceased has been identified as Akshay, a twenty-year-old resident of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The identity of the second female victim has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are working to establish her name.

After the recovery of the bodies, they were entrusted to the police for the necessary legal procedures. The situation underlines the risks involved with travel in flood-prone areas during heavy monsoon seasons, where swift currents can pose a serious threat to safety.

Local officials have committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the specific circumstances that led to the vehicle being swept away in the floodwaters. The findings from this investigation may provide further insights into improving safety measures for the region during future rainfall.

Community Response

The tragic incident has prompted a strong reaction from the local community, as residents are reminded of the severe impact of the monsoon season. Many expressed their condolences to the families affected and highlighted the need for increased awareness regarding travelling in flooded areas.

Emergency services have been put on high alert in anticipation of further rainfall, with officials urging people to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions. Local authorities are closely monitoring river levels and issuing alerts to inform residents of potential flooding risks.

The tragic events serve as a poignant reminder of nature’s power and the precautionary measures necessary to ensure public safety during extreme weather episodes. Continued vigilance is essential as the community prepares for ongoing monsoon challenges.
