Sunetra Pawar Assumes Office as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sunetra Pawar officially took over the responsibilities of Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister on February 10, Tuesday, a role she stepped into following the tragic passing of her husband, Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash in Baramati. This transition occurred 13 days after the incident, which took place on January 28, when the aircraft, returning to Baramati from Mumbai, unfortunately nosedived during its approach to the landing strip. Ajit Pawar, along with four others, including the pilots, lost their lives in this unfortunate event.

Ceremonial Oath and Initial Duties

Sunetra Pawar was elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislative group and took her oath of office as Deputy Chief Minister on January 31. Before she officially assumed her role, Pawar visited ‘Devgiri,’ the official residence of her late husband during his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister. Following this, she visited the Siddhivinayak temple and then proceeded to Chaitya Bhoomi to pay her respects at the memorial of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. After honoring Dr. Ambedkar, she visited the NCP office to pay homage in her late husband’s cabin.

New Portfolios Assigned

In her new capacity, Sunetra Pawar will oversee several key portfolios, including excise, sports and youth welfare, minority development, and Aukaf ministries. Notably, the finance department, previously held by Ajit Pawar, will remain under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
