Police Dismantle Inter-State Egg Donation Scam in Hyderabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities have dismantled an inter-state egg donation racket, rescuing 43 women following multiple raids in the Saroornagar region of Hyderabad. The operation, which took place on October 30, was triggered by information regarding suspicious activities linked to Shetty Working Women’s Hostel in Venkateswara Colony. This facility was allegedly managed by Emirishetty Durga Prasad, who is now among those arrested.

The rescued women hailed from various states, including West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Reports indicate that these individuals were allegedly lured into the scheme with promises of financial compensation ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for each egg donation cycle. This led to their transportation to Hyderabad for procedures at in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and fertility centres.

During the raids, police seized a variety of incriminating materials, including hormonal injections, tablets, syringes, and mobile phones. The operation extended beyond Saroornagar, covering areas such as Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, Erragadda, and Gopalapuram, underscoring the extensive nature of the racket.

Investigation into Operations and Practices

Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi confirmed the arrest of nine individuals, including the hostel owner, Durga Prasad. One of the First Information Reports (FIR) characterises Durga Prasad as a broker who allegedly facilitated payments to women for their participation in the egg donation process. The police are now focused on understanding the full extent of the operations and any potential violations of medical protocols.

Investigators are assessing whether the women underwent necessary medical procedures such as hormonal stimulation or egg retrieval. They are also examining whether informed consent was obtained and if medical safeguards were adhered to during these processes. Furthermore, the legitimacy of the facilities and fertility establishments involved is under scrutiny, particularly regarding their required registrations.

As part of the investigation, police are reviewing medical records, donor histories, and financial transactions. They are also exploring any connections with IVF centres and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) banks. The examination includes consent forms, identity documents, and the possibility of unauthorised medical supervision occurring on-site.

Legal Action and Future Steps

Three cases have been registered in connection with the racket, including two at Saroornagar and one at Begumpet. These cases are being pursued under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021. The legal framework aims to ensure that reproductive technologies are used ethically and responsibly.

The police have stated that the seized syringes and pills have been sent to Gandhi Hospital for testing. The results of these tests will be crucial in determining whether a systematic racket was operating from the premises. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to uncovering the full scope of the operation and ensuring justice for the affected women.

The case highlights significant concerns regarding the exploitation of vulnerable women in the egg donation sector. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are expected to implement measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future and safeguarding the rights of individuals involved in reproductive health services.
