Torn Cheek, 17 Stitches: Student Brutally Attacked by Stray Dogs in Kanpur

The CSR Journal Magazine

A horrifying incident in Shyam Nagar has left a young college student with severe injuries after she was attacked by three stray dogs while walking home. The 21-year-old victim, Vaishnavi Sahu, is currently recovering from serious facial trauma after undergoing emergency treatment, including 17 stitches on her cheek and nose.

The attack took place near Mudhavan Park during an unusual disturbance involving both stray dogs and monkeys. In the middle of the chaos, the dogs lunged at Vaishnavi, a final-year BBA student at Allen House Ruma College, dragging her to the ground and mauling her face and body.

“She cannot eat anything, nor move her mouth. Somehow, we are giving her liquids through a straw,” said one family member, describing the extent of her injuries. Vaishnavi’s right cheek was torn apart into two distinct sections, and her nose and other areas bore multiple bite wounds. Despite attempting to run, she was caught again and thrown to the ground by the dogs.

Locals Rescue Student from Vicious Dog Attack

Local residents rushed to her rescue after hearing her screams. Armed with sticks, they managed to drive the animals away. By then, however, the young woman was already covered in blood. Family members quickly arrived and transported her to Kanshiram Hospital, where doctors stitched her torn cheek and nose.

Her uncle, Ashutosh, who lives in KDA Colony, confirmed, “Vaishnavi, the daughter of my late brother Virendra Swaroop Sahu, was returning from college when this terrifying incident happened.”

Following the incident, residents in the area have expressed growing fear and anger. Several locals are reportedly staying indoors, afraid to go out due to the presence of aggressive stray animals in the neighborhood.

Family Demands Action on Stray Dogs

In a strong statement, the family demanded swift government intervention. “The government must do something about these dogs. Either catch them and take them away or keep them in shelters. But they should be removed from the streets so that no one else’s daughter or daughter-in-law suffers like this,” they said.

This disturbing event comes amid ongoing public concern surrounding a Supreme Court ruling on the sterilisation and relocation of stray dogs. The decision has triggered intense debate across the country, with this case further amplifying calls for urgent, on-ground action.

Vaishnavi’s condition remains critical in terms of mobility and eating, and the emotional and physical toll of the attack continues to weigh.
