State Bank of India Issues Warning Against Cyber Fraud

The CSR Journal Magazine

The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a warning to its customers regarding the dangers of searching for bank customer care numbers online. The bank cautions that fraudsters often create fake helpline listings to deceive individuals into sharing sensitive information or transferring funds. SBI advises customers to obtain customer support details exclusively from the bank’s official website, avoiding third-party sources that may not be reliable.

This advisory is part of SBI’s National Cyber Security Month Special Campaign 6.0, which aims to promote safe digital banking practices and educate the public on recognising and avoiding online scams. In a post on X dated 20 October 2026, SBI emphasised the importance of using official channels for customer care inquiries, stating, “Stay Alert, Stay Safe!!”

The bank’s message also includes a short video demonstrating how these scams operate, highlighting the risks associated with searching for “customer service” or “local business number” online. Customers are encouraged to be vigilant and cautious when seeking assistance.

Understanding the Fake Customer Care Number Scam

The scam involving fake customer care numbers typically begins when a customer searches for the bank’s helpline and selects a top result based on the name. The individual answering the call may sound professional, but the listing could be a fraudulent one designed by scammers to gain the caller’s trust. These fraudsters may request sensitive bank details, ask for payments, or instruct the customer to download specific applications.

A single misstep in this process can lead to significant financial losses. Fraudsters often publish fake numbers across various platforms, including websites, online directories, and social media. Once a customer initiates a call, the scammer may impersonate a bank officer or representative, seeking to extract confidential information or convince the victim to transfer funds to different accounts.

Customers who fall victim to such fraud should be aware of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) regulations regarding bank liability and compensation. It is crucial for individuals to understand their rights and the procedures in place to address financial fraud.

Precautionary Measures for Customers

Secondly, individuals should refrain from trusting numbers listed on random websites, online portals, or unverified social media posts. Suspicious listings can often lead to fraudulent interactions. Additionally, customers must be cautious of impersonators who may pose as bank officials or representatives from regulatory bodies, attempting to extract sensitive financial information.

It is imperative that customers never share confidential details such as ATM PINs, internet banking passwords, or one-time passwords (OTPs) with anyone claiming to represent the bank. No legitimate bank will request such information during complaint or dispute resolution processes.

Lastly, if a caller threatens to close an account or requests sensitive information, customers should disconnect the call immediately. They should then reach out to the bank through official channels to verify the situation.

Steps to Take If Fraud Is Suspected

In the event that a customer suspects they have been targeted by fraud, it is important to remain calm and take immediate action. Customers should contact their bank without delay to report the incident. Additionally, they can report the situation on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call 1930, the national cybercrime helpline.

SBI’s advisory underscores a fundamental principle: verify before making any calls. Taking a few moments to confirm the customer care number on the official website can safeguard both financial assets and personal information from potential misuse.
