Sonam Wangchuk Returns to Ladakh, Advocates for Collaborative Solutions

The CSR Journal Magazine

As hundreds gathered in Leh, Sonam Wangchuk, an environmental activist and member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), received a tumultuous welcome following his release from incarceration. On Sunday, Wangchuk addressed supporters with a call for a constructive dialogue between the Union government and Ladakhi leaders, advocating for a balanced resolution that benefits both the people of Ladakh and the central authorities. While refraining from specific mentions of the Sixth Schedule or statehood, he emphasized a need for mutual give and take during the negotiations.

Ongoing Struggle for Ladakh’s Rights

Wangchuk reaffirmed his commitment to continue fighting for Ladakh’s interests if necessary. The event was organized by the LAB, in coordination with the Kargil Democratic Alliance, both of which are advocating for statehood and incorporation under the Sixth Schedule for the Union Territory of Ladakh. “My fight was for Ladakh’s people, its culture, environment, and for its rivers, flora and fauna, and glaciers. Their success is my success,” said Wangchuk, while supporters displayed banners highlighting calls for justice in the region along with images honoring four individuals who lost their lives during police action in Leh on September 24 last year.

Hope for Justice and Reconciliation

Describing the initiative as a “new dawn,” Wangchuk noted that the movement is entering a “new phase” while advocating for flexible approaches. He indicated that the government had acknowledged the September 24 incident as a mistake and expressed intentions to amend the situation. Wangchuk voiced optimism that justice would be achieved regarding the incident, along with the release of those detained.

Background of Wangchuk’s Detention

Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, 2025, and was subsequently held in Jodhpur jail. Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs revoked his detention, affirming the government’s commitment to ensuring necessary protections for Ladakh while expressing hopes for resolution through dialogue and constructive engagement. The latest discussions between government officials and Ladakhi leaders occurred on February 4 but ended without a resolution. Leaders from Ladakh are eager to engage in further discussions soon.

Anticipation of Future Dialogues

Wangchuk expressed that the upcoming talks should result in outcomes favorable to both parties, rather than the rumored unfavorable scenarios circulating within the community. He hinted at the importance of transparency following the negotiations, suggesting that Ladakhi leaders will reach out to the broader population to communicate whether the results of the talks lead to a beneficial outcome or not.
