Shashi Tharoor Asserts Congress is the A-Team of Kerala Ahead of Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – As the Kerala Assembly Elections approach, Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor conveyed optimism regarding the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) chances for success. He characterized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a “zero-seat party” in the state, asserting that the real competition lies between the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Tharoor expressed his confidence, stating, “Don’t forget that the BJP holds no seats in Kerala. The actual contest is between UDF and LDF.” He added that the UDF boasts experienced candidates alongside new faces, which he believes will appeal to voters tired of the LDF’s governance.

Call for New Governance

Tharoor emphasized the electorate’s desire for a fresh approach in leadership. “The people are looking for positive-minded, innovative governance, and this is the vision for Kerala,” he noted. He projected that the Congress party would secure between 85 to 100 seats in the upcoming elections. Addressing the ongoing ‘B team’ controversy, he dismissed it as nonsensical, asserting that the Congress does not seek to be anyone’s second choice, stating, “We are the A-Team of Kerala.” He remarked that both the BJP and the LDF oppose the Congress gaining power in the state, emphasizing the party’s commitment to the interests of the people of Kerala.

Support for Women’s Reservation Bill

Tharoor expressed support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, highlighting the challenges women face in political representation. He pointed out that, in terms of electoral seats, women have not been awarded a significant share, with Congress allocating only 10% and the BJP 11%. He underscored the necessity of a reservation bill to ensure that women have guaranteed opportunities in politics, acknowledging the gaps that still exist.

Clarification on Pro-BJP Statements

In light of recent misunderstandings regarding pro-BJP statements attributed to him, Tharoor clarified that his remarks have always been pro-India rather than supportive of the BJP. He described himself as a strong critic of the BJP, particularly concerning issues of communalism. “I believe communalism undermines the nation’s interests. However, as a responsible citizen, I advocate for the national interest,” he said.

Comments on Rahul Gandhi’s Criticism of the Central Government

Responding to criticisms made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding the Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tharoor acknowledged the unfortunate reflection the current situation bears on the party. “It is quite embarrassing for us. I supported the government’s restraint concerning the Iran war, hoping it would foster a space for peace-making, reinforcing India as a voice of peace. Ironically, it now appears Pakistan is taking the lead in diplomatic efforts,” he remarked.

Upcoming Kerala Legislative Assembly Elections

The polling for the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections is scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. The current assembly’s term will conclude on May 23. The Congress-led UDF aims to overcome the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led LDF, which has governed the state for nearly ten years, in hopes of taking control of the 140-member assembly.
