A student leader has been accused of molestation at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University. The accused is an SFI (Students’ Federation of India) leader, a student organisation politically aligned with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A student has lodged a complaint against the student leader named Soumik Mandal. Allegedly, they went on an educational trip to West Bengal’s Shantiniketan. The molestation incident took place there.

An SFI leader from the university said, “The incident happened. We have issued this statement after receiving information. We will not keep any such element in the organisation.”

The SFI’s Jadavpur University regional committee said in a press statement on Wednesday night that after receiving the complaint from the student, they have decided to temporarily suspend the accused from all activities pertaining to the organisation.

Alleged molestation took place during excursion to Shantiniketan

The student leader against whom the complaint of molestation is filed is a student of the English department of the university. The complainant is also from the English department. According to sources, they recently went to UNESCO World Heritage Site Shantiniketan for an internship excursion during which the student alleged that she was molested, which she reported to the organisation. The matter is being probed while the accused has been suspended by the SFI.

SFI issues statement announcing suspension of accused student leader

SFI issued a statement on Wednesday which says, “A complaint of molestation against the Associate Editor of the Arts Unit of Jadavpur University has been submitted to the organisation. A student from Jadavpur University has filed a complaint with the organisation. After the complaint was received from the unit level to the local (regional) level, after initial discussions in the organisation, we decided that the leader will be stopped from all work at all levels until a final decision is taken. The decision will come into effect as soon as this statement is published.” The statement named SFI’s Jadavpur University Regional Committee President Russell Parvez and Secretary Saugat Tarafdar.

Molestation charges amid probe on JU student death by drowning

The molestation charges come at a time amid ongoing investigation on the death of a third year English department student Anamika Mondal who died by drowning in a lake near Gate Number 4 of the university. Her family has alleged foul play and filed a complaint with the police station. The police are examining the CCTV footage of the campus. Meanwhile, the English department of Jadavpur has once again made headlines for another incident.
