The Delhi High Court witnessed the formal induction of seven judicial officers into its bench on September 21. Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya officiated the oath-taking ceremony, which took place at the court premises. Family members, colleagues, and members of the Delhi High Court Bar were present at the event to witness the significant occasion.

New Appointments and Their Backgrounds

The newly appointed judges include Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt, and Arun Bhardwaj. Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena have been designated as judges, while the others have been appointed as additional judges. All appointees were elevated from the Delhi district judiciary and judicial administration, marking a notable progression in their judicial careers.

Before this appointment, Arun Bhardwaj served as the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court, and the other judges have held various senior roles in the district judiciary, including Principal District and Sessions Judges and Special Judges. Their experience within the judicial system is expected to enhance the operational capacity of the High Court.

This appointment follows the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The Collegium convened on September 10 and suggested eight judicial officers for promotion to the High Court bench, though the Centre later confirmed the appointment of seven of these officers.

Impact on Delhi High Court’s Functionality

The elevation of these seven judicial officers is particularly significant given the current context of the Delhi High Court’s operational framework. With a sanctioned strength of 60 judges, the addition of the new appointees brings the functional strength of the court to 50 judges. This increase in the number of judges is aimed at addressing the rising caseload and filling existing vacancies within the High Court.

Judicial expertise from the trial courts and administrative backgrounds of the new judges is anticipated to strengthen the bench’s capacity. This aligns with the High Court’s ongoing efforts to manage its backlog and improve the delivery of justice. The presence of the newly appointed judges is likely to positively influence the efficiency with which cases are handled.
